Charter Work Experience A brief introduction – please note that a second presentation exists with detailed specifics & limitations.

Contacting Charter Only Mr McCready or Careers Staff are allowed to make direct contact with Charter. If a student or parent contacts Charter directly they will simply refer you to Mr McCready or the careers staff in your school.

Charter companies 2016/17 All Health trusts (Clinical professions – placements & open days across all Health Trusts) Bombardier – limited to 1 student Belfast City council Translink Belfast City & International Airport Marks & Spencer Plc. Danske Bank Graham Asset Management NI Court Service Business Services Organisation Business in the Community Charles Hurst Group Liberty IT National Museums NI List always subject to change – for example UTV are not taking any students at present.

Demand Versus Supply Most work experience (but especially medical related placements) can be filled multiple times. Demand will exceed supply as you are competing with all other schools in the greater Belfast Area who tend to have work experience at similar times.

Arranging work experience with Charter Three types –Requests – You register an interest in a Charter company as early as possible. Places allocated by Charter evenly to all schools as they become available. –Open days / work inspiration events – register interest for various open days / taster sessions –Pre-arranged / Sponsored – You contact a Charter contact directly and they verbally agree to the placement (pending all paper work and checks – not available in most cases for medical placements – BHSCT only). This method is gradually being phased out.

Requests Process To register an interest in a Charter company you must record your; –name, form class, form tutor, –A-Levels being studied –AND the companies / general industry area you are interested in on the appropraite sheet at the end of this presentation. These names will be forwarded to Charter ASAP. We will do our best to place you but there are no guarantees. Get a backup placement organised.

Requests Process In the meantime, if you find your own / private work experience please inform Mr McCready so that you name can be removed from the Charter list. Places are offered to schools on a even / rotational basis, E.g. 1 to Regent, 1 to Bangor Grammar and so on across all the schools until the placements are used up. Please continue to search for your own private work experience as there is ZERO guarantee that you will get what you requested from Charter.

Open Days / Work Inspiration Events On top of placements, Charter offer a number of open days or taster sessions for part of a day. To register for these you must see Mr McCready ASAP as places are available on first come first served. Once they are all allocated they are gone. A separate sheet to record your details and areas that you are interested in exists for Open Day registrations.

Open day / work inspiration Events in 2016/17 Open Days Dietetics Pharmacy Physiotherapy Clinical Psychology Laboratory work Radiotherapy Speech & Language therapy Work Inspiration (Legal) Arthur Cox Solicitors Carson McDowell Pinsent Mason Work Inspiration (Engineering) Caterpillar (NI) Limited Montupet Survitec BE Aerospace

Pre-arranged case If you have a family member / contact / sponsor who works for a Charter company AND they are prepared to provisionally take you / verbally agree to the work experience week during year, then you need to see Mr McCready ASAP. You need to fill in a separate pre-arranged work experience form with all the contact details of your work placement recorded. Only Belfast Trust takes pre-arranged cases any more.

Pre-arranged You are only guaranteed the placement when Charter authenticate –the dates / times / and contact details of staff involved –Receive the various permissions, confidentiality agreement and insurance forms. –This can take a number of months. You will probably receive written confirmation from Mr McCready possibly only a week before you are due to go on work experience. So please have a backup work placement just in case.
