Secondary Curriculum in Practice Developing with an Integrated Approach

Agenda Define Curriculum Discuss Ways to Integrate Share Integrated Examples Group Work with Common Objective

What is Curriculum? “... Includes the compilation of books, materials, technology, experience, interactions, and relationships of all involved in the classroom” (Beam & Pinkie, 2016, p. 3)

Ways to Integrate Curriculum Activity Legend Active Learning Assessment Collaboration Character Education Critical Thinking Diversity Technology Integration Legend Art Dance Health Language Arts Math Music Physical Education/Music Science Social Studies Theatre

Template DAY # CONTENT/ OBJECTIVE  Skills  Knowledg e  Dispositio ns  Concepts  Themes  Values STANDARDS  State Standard s  National Standard s RESOURCES / MATERIALS Include (1) resources to assist the teacher in planning and implementing lessons and (2) materials students need to participate.  Books  Technology  Supplies  Community organizations  Guest speakers  Websites LEARNING ACTIVITIES / ASSESSMENTS After each code below, list the day #’s in which the element is present. Codes are not required in every day’s lesson but should be distributed appropriately throughout. You may create other codes if necessary to reflect special considerations not listed here. Simply listing the code is not sufficient. A brief explanation is needed to describe what the legend is referring to. For example, instead of just listing “CE,” describe what character trait is being taught and how it relates to the lesson. Instead of just listing “ACT,” describe how the students will be engaged in active learning. ACTIVITY LEGEND (All of the Activity Codes are required to be integrated at least once each week. It’s important to show a variety of the legends distributed throughout the project.): ACT = active learning - Day #: ASSESS = assessment activity - Day#: COLL = There are different types of collaboration: (1) teacher with community members/organizations or other educators and (2) students with other students or community members - Day#: CE = character education - Day#: CT = critical thinking activity - Day#: DIV = diversity consideration - Day#: T = technology - Day#: INTEGRATION LEGEND (A variety of interdisciplinary integrations should be included at least once per 9- weeks. Not all are necessary, only those that can reasonably be integrated into your subject area. If a code is not used at all, enter N/A after “Day #’s” for that code.): A = art - Day#: D = dance - Day#: H = health - Day#: L = language arts - Day#: M = math - Day#: MUS = music - Day#: P = physical education / movement - Day#: S = science - Day#: SS = social science - Day#: TH = Theatre - Day#:
