2 A little about me…. Born and Raised in Fort Wayne, IN Graduated from Wittenberg University in 2012 Played volleyball for Wittenberg University- won the National Championship my senior year! Taught First Grade and coached volleyball at a HS in Fort Wayne for 3 years. This is my second year teaching 1 st grade at Bailey. I love travelling. I also enjoy spending lots of time with friends and family.

8 Social Studies Families Now and Long Ago, Near and Far The first-grade year builds on the concepts developed in kindergarten by focusing on the individual as a member of a family. Students begin to understand how families lived long ago and how they live in other cultures. They develop concepts about how the world is organized spatially through beginning map skills. Physical Science: Motion and Materials This topic focuses on the changes in properties that occur in objects and materials. Changes of position of an object are a result of pushing or pulling. Life Science: Basic needs of Living Things This topic focuses on the physical needs of living things in Ohio. 9 Enrichment Practices 1 st grade focus - A year of Imagining We Grow Thinkers in Dublin City Schools! We grow thinkers by immersing all students in a school-wide culture committed to the development of thinking skills through thoughtful engagement with big ideas and complex problems. Through explicit support from a collaborative instructional team, students blossom into thinkers who are able to independently apply thinking habits in complex and creative ways. The 6 Habits of Thinkers: 1. Ask questions 2. Collaborate with others 3. Create and Innovate 4. Persevere 5. Think flexibly 6. Communicates ideas with confidence

10 Special Shares Part of our Ohio academic learning standards in Language Arts (Speaking and Listening) Program will be graded for the report card. 4 times a year, a new theme will be assigned. Please work with your child in developing a 2-3 minute presentation. They may present their share anytime during the scheduled week.

11 Sailor of the Week Each week, we will have a different student highlighted so that we can learn a little more about everyone in the classroom. Monday – Share All About Me Pennant –A poster will come home that your child can work on to share with the class. Tuesday – Free choice seating Wednesday – Bring in a favorite book to share with the class Thursday – Bring a special object in a bag and students can ask yes/no questions to figure out what is in the bag. Friday – Take home Ty, our classroom Tiger, to write and draw pictures about what you did over the weekend with him. I will send an email home letting you know when your child will be the sailor!

12 Homework Optional Reading Goal Log You and your student decide on reading goals for the week. You do not need to turn it back in to the teacher. 14 Reading at Home Goal: 15-20 min each night! Just Right Books-Raz Kids- Book Bags Reading Strategies (tricky words: use the picture, lips ready, read through the word, switch sounds, etc.) Comprehension Strategies: Retell the story and ask questions about the story Look and talk about the pictures Make predictions Ask questions that focus on the meaning of the story. What part did you like the best?

15 85% of everything a child reads should be easy for them!! 15% should be a bit of a challenge!! 0% should be at the difficult level because it provides no purpose for learning.

16 Bailey 3 Be kind Be Respectful Follow the directions the first time We review and discuss these during our morning meeting and throughout the day. It’s common language used throughout the school. Be a Problem Solver! Have Fun!
