4 What You Need to Know The FSA ID (Parent/Student) The new school year for federal aid is July 1, 2017- June 30, 2018 (2017-2018 FAFSA) If you do not have an award letter from a school - you have no aid to assist in the payment of school expenses The earlier you start, the BETTER!!

5 Who can get federal student aid? U.S. citizen, permanent resident, “other eligible noncitizens High school graduate or GED holder Eligible degree/certificate program Valid Social Security number Males registered for Selective Service Students enrolled and meeting satisfactory academic progress in college/career school If you are not eligible for FAFSA check into TASFA

6 How much federal student aid can I get? Maximum amounts for the major programs for a dependent freshman in 2016-17: Federal Pell Grant: 2016-17 max award $5,815 Current dependent Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Loans: $5,500 total Federal Work-Study: depends on funds available at school Direct PLUS Loan (for parents) Funds from other programs are available; use https://studentaid.ed.gov as a resource. https://studentaid.ed.gov

7 You will need an FSA ID for Federal aid The FSA ID is a username and password used by students, parents, and borrowers to: login to U.S. Department of Education websites electronically sign documents You will use it: Every year you apply for federal student aid at fafsa.govfafsa.gov To receive a federal student loan To perform important activities such as competing your FAFSA each year, submit corrections, check history of federal grants and loans awarded To perform other important activities as a federal student loan borrower, such as choosing a repayment plan or applying for a deferment 7

Complete PLUS loan requests Estimate your student loan payments using the Repayment Estimator Apply for an income-driven repayment plan or a consolidation loan Agreement to Serve (ATS) at www.teach-ats.ed.gov www.teach-ats.ed.gov Sign your ATS for the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program 8

9 Does my parent need an FSA ID? If you are a dependent student, then your parent will need an FSA ID in order to sign your FAFSA electronically Not sure if you’re considered a dependent student for the FAFSA, go to StudentAid.gov/dependency to find outStudentAid.gov/dependency IMPORTANT You and your parent must have different FSA IDs You must create your own FSA ID—it’s your electronic signature and you need to own it Your parent must create his or her own FSA ID You and your parent should each use your own e-mail address when creating an FSA ID (you can’t use/share the same e-mail address) 9
