2 2 Family Medicine (Course Orientation)

3  PHC is an essential element of the health services of any country that aimed at providing a good health care for its community.  Primary care (PC) centers have a central role in the Saudi health strategy.  Family Medicine is a diverse discipline in that it deals with the whole patient and his or her family.

4 Family Medicine  This course is designed to give an introduction to the basic principles of Family Medicine.  It is anticipated that some further knowledge and skills will be build upon this base with other similar courses or other teaching and learning activities.  Attention is given to the most important clinical problems and situations that are expected to face at daily life.

5 5 Students are expected at the end of the course to improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes on:  The definition and basic principles of family medicine,  Demonstration of good communication skills  Applying consultation models in general practice  The evidence based management for all common problems

6 The course includes:  Fundamentals of Family Medicine topics e.g., concepts and principles of Family Medicine, clinical care such as acute and chronic care as well as health promotion and prevention.  Introduction to common clinical problems encountered in family practice and geriatric care.  Practical sessions facilitate the development of consultation, communication, interviewing, and management plans skills.

7  Principles of Family Medicine: Family Medicine Principles - Values that define the profession, which should guide our educational activities.  Communication Skills  Share information with patients, families in a clear, respectful manner  Demonstrate an ability to adapt his/her communication techniques  Write clear and accurate orders for: Investigations and medications Prescriptions Referral letter

8  Clinical Skills:  Demonstrate knowledge of clinical problems commonly seen in Family Medicine  Demonstrate evidence based approach to the assessment and management of patients with multiple medical problems  Community Resource:  Demonstrate basic knowledge of health care resources in the community.  Work collaboratively as part of the health care team in the community.

9  Professionalism:  Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior with the patient, relatives, peers, and preceptors at all times.  Respond to feedback in a constructive and professional manner.  Demonstrate respect for the confidentiality of patients and their families.

10  Different instructional methods will be implemented throughout the clerkship to convey the learning objectives of the curriculum.  The learning process in this module includes:  Lectures.  Tutorial with student presentation.  Training in PHC clinics. CBLs  Case Based Learning sessions CBLs. SDL  Self-Directed Learning SDL.
