Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Jung Sun Moon Psalms 109 1.O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, 2.for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. 3.With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. 4.In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. 5.They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship. 6.Appoint an evil man to oppose him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. 7.When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. 8.May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Jung Sun Moon Psalms 109 9.May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. 10.May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes. 11.May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. 12.May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. 13.May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation. 14.May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. 15.May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Jung Sun Moon Psalms 109 16.For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. 17.He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come on him; he found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him. 18.He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. 19.May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. 20.May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me. 21.But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. 22.For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Jung Sun Moon Psalms 109 23.I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. 24.My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. 25.I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. 26. Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love. 27.Let them know that it is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it. 28.They may curse, but you will bless; when they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. 29.My accusers will be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. 30.With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Jung Sun Moon Psalms 109 31.For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.

Today’s Prayer Prayer by Jung Sun Moon

This Week’s Verse When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. (Acts 13:48-49) (Nov. 25)

Next Week’s Verse At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. (Acts 14:1~2) (Dec. 2)

Today’s phrase Nothing so infuriated the Jews as the thought that the blessings of salvation might be extended to the despised Gentiles. Nothing so _______________ ____________ as the thought that _________________________. (Nov. 25) Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord ____________ spent considerable time, speaking ____________. (Dec. 2)

This Week’s Conversation A: Can you tell me why some go to heaven while others go to hell? B: Well, according to the Bible, some are elected by God to be saved, while others refuse to believe so they go to hell. A: I don’t understand. B: What don’t you understand? A: It seems to me that there’s no choice in being saved, but people choose to go to hell by rejecting God. B: That’s right. Logically, these two doctrines are difficult to resolve. But you just have to accept them. A: I see.

Next Week’s Conversation A: Paul and Barnabas are great representatives of missionary in the Christian history. B: Right! We can learn a lot of lessons from their story. A: Acts 14 shows the qualities of great missionary. B: There must be some lessons there. What are they? A: First of all, Paul and Barnabas ministered their spiritual gifts effectively in the local churches. B: What is a spiritual gift? A: A spiritual gift is not a natural human ability or talent but a bestowment by the grace of God on believers that provided a channel through which the Holy Spirit’s power flows in ministry. B: What a profound definition!

Today’s Reading Acts 14 1.At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed. 2.But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. 3.So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders. 4.The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. 5.There was a plot afoot among the Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. 6.But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country,

Today’s Reading Acts 14 7.where they continued to preach the good news. 8.In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. 9.He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10.and called out, "Stand up on your feet!" At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

Qualities of a Great Missionary, Part I (Acts 14:1 – 10) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders. (Acts 14:3)

Acts 14 contains the continuing story of Paul and Barnabas, companions on the first missionary journey to the Gentiles. The good news of Jesus Christ started in Jerusalem, spread to Judea and Samaria, and now the first two missionaries, Paul and Barnabas, are carrying it to the Gentile world. In their travels through Galatia, as recorded in Acts 14, Paul and Barnabas exhibit the characteristics or qualities of a truly effective missionary. Through the flow of this narrative, these two servants of God manifest examples of seven qualities that make for effective spiritual ministry: (1) Spirit-giftedness, (2) boldness, (3) humility, (4) persistence, (5) caring, (6) commitment, and (7) reverence. Introduction

Spirit-Giftedness The characteristic of Spirit-giftedness is evident throughout the chapter. As Paul and Barnabas ministered, they employed the gifts the Spirit had given them. A spiritual gift is not a natural human ability or talent but a bestowment by the grace of God on believers that provides a channel through which the Holy Spirit’s power flows in ministry (1 Cor. 12:7). The mutual exercise of those enablements is thus vital to the proper functioning and building of the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:14ff.).

Spirit-Giftedness Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (1 Cor. 12:7) A manifestation of something is one of the different ways in which it can appear. If you minister to people or to their needs, you serve them or help them, for example by making sure that they have everything they need or want.

Spirit-Giftedness In this chapter, four of these gifts can be seen in operation. The first is prophecy (1 Cor. 12:10), the Spirit-given ability to proclaim the Word of God with clarity and power. Verse 1 : At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed. Verse 21: They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples.

Spirit-Giftedness to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. (1 Cor. 12:10)

Spirit-Giftedness A second grace gift exhibited by the missionaries was teaching (Rom. 12:7). Verse 22 describes their ministry of strengthening the souls of the disciples. Such strengthening was a result of teaching them the Word (cf. Acts 2:42). (Rom. 12:7) If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; Paul and Barnabas also manifested the gift of exhortation (Rom. 12:8)—the spiritual encouragement that leads the one encouraged to pursue a righteous course of action.

Spirit-Giftedness A final gift evident in this chapter is that of leadership (Rom. 12:8). As part of their duties, Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in every church (v. 23). They did not leave their new converts to fend for themselves. Their leadership gifts enabled them to bring structure to the newly formed congregations and install appropriate leaders.

Spirit-Giftedness Those four gifts are at the heart of all spiritual ministry in building the church. They are still vital today for pastor-teachers and evangelists. Besides those permanent edifying gifts, the apostles also possessed temporary sign gifts unique to their Lord and to them (2 Cor. 12:12). This passage mentions two of those apostolic gifts: miracles (v. 3) and healing (v. 8).

Spirit-Giftedness Those unique gifts confirmed that the apostles spoke for God (Heb. 2:3–4). Such supernatural confirmation is unnecessary today. Whether a man speaks for God can and must now be determined by whether his message conforms to the only standard, which is Scripture. Since effective ministry demands the collective functioning of spiritual gifts, in Romans 12:6–8 Paul exhorts the church:

Spirit-Giftedness Rom.12:6-8 6.We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7.If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8.if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Spirit-Giftedness Peter also wrote of the urgent need for each individual to minister his particular gift: “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.” (1 Pet. 4:10) It was because Paul and Barnabas had ministered their gifts effectively in their local church (cf. Acts 13:1–3) that God chose them for the challenge of missionary service. They had proven their faithfulness and were ready for a wider scope of ministry.

Boldness Having been driven out of Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13:50), Paul and Barnabas went to Iconium, about eighty miles to the southeast. Iconium was a cultural melting pot—native Phrygians whose ancestors had occupied the area from ancient times, Greeks and Jews who dated back to the Seleucid period (312–65 B.C.), and Roman colonists who had arrived more recently. There they spoke in such a manner that a great multitude believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.

Boldness As at Pisidian Antioch, however, jealousy rapidly appeared in all its ugliness. The New Testament equates unbelief in the gospel with disobedience (John 3:36; Rom. 2:8; 15:31; Eph. 2:2; 5:6; 2 Thess. 1:8; Titus 3:3; 1 Pet. 4:17), since “God is now declaring to men that all everywhere should repent” and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 17:30–31). Those who refuse to do so are disobedient to God’s command.

Boldness While Paul and Barnabas spent a long time at Iconium speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, their enemies slowly poisoned public opinion against them. The mounting opposition did not intimidate Paul and Barnabas but energized them to speak out boldly. Boldness is that essential quality without which nothing significant can be accomplished for the gospel. Boldness certainly defined the apostle Paul. Such boldness has been basic to effective Christian service throughout the centuries.

Boldness The smoldering opposition to Paul and Barnabas eventually burst into flame. Paul and Barnabas were bold, but not foolish. When they became aware of what was happening, in sensible self-preservation they fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region. Their flight was an act of prudence, not cowardice (cf. Matt. 10:23).

Today’s discussion What does God want from people who are fit for service in any ministry? What does every Christian receive at the moment of salvation? What is a spiritual gift? What responsibility does every Christian have regarding spiritual gifts? What were the four dominant spiritual gifts exhibited by Paul and Barnabas? Explain each one. Why are these four gifts important? What were the special gifts available to the apostles and which do not exist today? Explain. What was the purpose of these gifts? Why is it no longer needed today?

Today’s pop quiz Which is not one of the four dominant spiritual gifts exhibited by Paul and Barnabas in Acts 14? 1. Prophecy 2. Teaching 3. Exaltation 4. Leadership

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13)

Today’s Prayer Topic Let us proclaim the gospel with boldness.

God will make a way Where there seems to be no way He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me He will be my guide Hold me closely to His side With love and strength for each new day He will make a way.... He will make a way
