B-ball lab data

What does a graph of x –vs- t look like for your b-ball roll data? X (m) t (s) 0 0 x 1 1 4 2 9 3 t Parabola (non-linear) not great for predictions!

What do you need to due (using math) to make a linear relationship here? If you said “plot the square of the time intervals” then you were right on man! X (m) t (s) t 2 0 0 0 1 1 1 4 2 4 9 3 9 x t 2

How did you know that?? Compare the equation for displacement and the equation of a line! displacement = ½a t 2 Y = m x + b (no y intercept here so no “b”) Do you see how the x axis needs to be t 2 ?? Good!!!

NOW WHAT?? Now you get to work on Excell to: Plot data Make a graph Derive a linear relationship Ask excell to give you the equation of the line

HOW??? Go to my web page. Pull up the “finding equations from data” form Enter data and plot data points Find a way to make the data points linear Click on data points – chart (or R click on data point) – add trendline – dialogue box appears – options – check boxes that allow display of eq. and r 2 values (should be ~.99) Write down what you need to do to linearize it.
