Data Analysis and Visualisation

Problem Solving Methodology

Data analysis & visualisation Information can be presented through: – A written report – An oral report – Visually, eg. Histogram or linegraph Advantages of visual representation: – Clearly see patterns in the data – Increases clarity and usability of information

Data visualisation

Analysing Information Problems This often involves: – Determining the scope of the solution – Determining the requirements of the solution – Determining the constraints of the solution Feedback: – Quantitative data, measurable and specific, eg. No of students who attend assembly – Qualitative data, harder to measure and deals with people’s opinions and feelings towards something

Analysing Information Problems Quantitative data gathered by: – Surveys – Questionnaires – Observation Software eg, excel, can analyse quantitative data CSV file, a plain text file specially formatted to store spreadsheet or database style information Quantitative data is easy to communicate using data visualisations.

Analysing Information Problems Qualitative data: – Interviews – Video footage and – Observation Analysis of qualitative data is through finding themes, etc. A text cloud is used to analyse qualitative data

Analysing Information Problems Constraints and limitations A constraint is any factor that influences the nature of the solution Eg, time take to produce the solution and resources available to be part of the solution Limitations to the usability of the solution, eg. Technical when using the solution and economic, eg. Purchasing software
