1 Year 1 Autumn 1 Curriculum Newsletter Welcome to Year 1, we hope you have had a good summer holiday! The children are settling in really well. Could you please leave your child at the door in the morning as this will continue to encourage their independence. The class teacher will be available at the door in the mornings and the gate at the end of the day, please feel free to come and ask any questions or pass on relevant information to do with your child. We will be learning lots of exciting things linked to our topics this term. English The focus for this half term will be stories by Allan and Janet Ahlberg, including the story of “Funnybones”. The children will be learning how to write simple sentences, thinking carefully about spelling. They will be looking at basic punctuation, including full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. They will also be learning how to write a non-fiction sentence about toys. Children will also be taught phonics daily to help them improve their reading and spelling. Topic “My Funnybones” and “Super Sandwich” This term we will cover two topics. In My Funnybones the children will be looking at their bodies, how we grow and changes within our life, including old and new toys. In Super Sandwich we will be looking at Harvest. As part of these topics we will take a trip to a toy shop to explore different styles of toys. Science: Our Bodies History: Toys from the past Art: Painting PSHCE: Getting to know you RE: Harvest and thankfulness Computing: Starting up/ shutting down a computer Maths In Maths we will be learning to: Order numbers Add and subtract Count forwards and backwards in 1’s Investigate heavier and lighter objects Use balance scales to weigh toys Recognise coins Add small amounts of money

2 Learning together at home English Speaking listening activity- Discuss yours and your child’s favourite toy. Ask older members of the family what toys they enjoyed playing with. Home reading Children will have books to share at home, reading scheme books and library books. Please record any reading in their reading diaries. The children will change their reading books every Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your child has their book bag in school every day. Topic Draw and label your body to be used on display in our x-ray role play. Please bring in by Friday 25th September. All About Me Bag Each Friday one child from each class will bring home the class “All About Me Bag”. The children are to collect items that will tell the class about themselves. This will be shared on the next Friday week. More details to follow. Maths While out and about with your child practise: counting forwards and backwards in ones recognising numbers to 20 Measuring yourselves or parts of you, e.g. arm, leg, etc… Assemblies The themes for our assemblies this term are: ‘New Beginnings’, ‘Golden Rules” and “Harvest” Children will have the opportunity to share in whole school assemblies and together as a class. We have a celebration Assembly on Friday to celebrate birthdays and award our stars of the week. P.E. Will be every Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit in school. Please ensure your child has suitable outdoor kit, including shoes. Future Dates Thursday 17 th September – Science Day – Dress as a scientist
