SUBJECT These activities form part of teaching under the subject of “Radiation and Wave Propagation” in the Telecommunication Engineering Degree at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

OBJECTIVES To apply knowledge of telecommunications in disadvantaged regions. Understand the importance of telecommunication for a region that wants thrive.

CONTEXT PERU AT A GLANCE: Peru is divided into 25 regions, 194 provinces and 1624 districts Complex and rugged geography In 2013 Peru was considered a middle-income country with a GDP per capita of € 8,132 per inhabitant

CONTEXT PERU TELECOMMUNICATION SECTOR

CONTEXT GOVERNANCE AND HEALTH IN PERU  Between 2002 and 2009 the government prioritized the improvement of good governance (several laws…)  The state recognized the importance of using ICTs in enhancing organizational management and performance and established the National Office of Electronic Government and Information Technology.  Most inequalities in health are due to the conditions in which people are born.  Women and men are affected by different social determinant of health

CONTEXT WILLAY PROGRAMME It is implemented in two distinct regions: ❖ San Pablo in Cajamarca. ❖ Acomayo in Cusco. It proposes the: ❖ use of ICTs in rural areas for democratic governance and citizen participation. ❖ 44 local government institutions have been provided with a telecommunication infrastructure shared between them.

CLASS AND HOMEWORK 2 hours classroom exercise. 8 -12 hours homework activity.

CLASS ACTIVITY Internet diffusion in Peru is to low in regions like Acomayo. We want to connect the different buildings institution with the next possibilities.  HF between two transmitters  VHF/UHF  WILD system  Satellite communications

QUESTIONS 1.Explain the advantages and disadvantages of all the different systems listed 2.In the WILD case the parameters are:  12 km distance,  antenna beamwidth of 10º in elevation and 90º in azimuth,  antenna gain of 18dBi,  frequency is 5.8GHz,  receiver sensitivity -90dBm,  connector losses in both antennas 1dB,  total frequency bandwidth 100MHz. a) Draw the schematic radio communication system.

b) What kind of antennas would you use? c) Calculate the power transmitted with previous information. d) Value of signal to noise ratio if the noise factor of the receiver is 3dB, for a channel bandwidth of 2MHz e) How can we improve the receiver, sensitivity and the signal to noise ratio. QUESTIONS

3.Analyse a satellite communication system using Hispasat Amazonas satellite, located 36,000km from the Earth, with EIRP=52dBW. The downlink frequency is 4GHz and the uplink one is 6GHz. All the channels have a bandwidth of 8MHz, and the antenna diameter is 1m. a) Estimate the antenna gains for this link. b) What kind of antennas can we use? c) Calculate the downlink signal to noise ratio, if the amplifiers have a F=2dB. d) If the sensitivity is S=-105dBm. What should be the transmitted power if the gain of the satellite antenna is 32dBi at 6GHz? QUESTIONS

4. Compare the results of the two previous cases.

HOMEWORK ACTIVITY The work will be carried out in groups of four students:  Design a radio communication system that covers a certain zone of Peru.  The objective is connecting different public institutions and studying the possibility of include homes.  The working area is the Acomayo province of Cuzco (Peru).  There are mobile phone (GSM) networks in the area (Claro).  The student will design a WIFI radio communication system.

FIRST DELIVERY Analysis of the:  Zone energy and telecommunications infrastructures.  Poverty index.  Human Development Index.  Education index.

Analyse advantages and disadvantages of the telecommunication system:  The use of the telephone network in the zone.  The use of the satellite network with VSAT links or similar.  The extension of the network with HF telecommunication system.  The extension of the network with VHF/UHF telecommunication system.  The extension of the network with WILD system.  Select two of the above proposals. SECOND DELIVERY

Choose the best option of the previous proposals and justify your selection. Perform a network design from the radio design point of view. THIRD DELIVERY:
