Instructions for using this template. Remember this is Jeopardy, so where I have written “Answer” this is the prompt the students will see, and where I have “Question” should be the student’s response. To enter your questions and answers, click once on the text on the slide, then highlight and just type over what’s there to replace it. If you hit Delete or Backspace, it sometimes makes the text box disappear. When clicking on the slide to move to the next appropriate slide, be sure you see the hand, not the arrow. (If you put your cursor over a text box, it will be an arrow and WILL NOT take you to the right location.)

Choose a category. You will be given the answer. You must give the correct question. Click to begin.

Osmosis Active TransportRandom 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points Diffusion Plasma membrane

What is the lipid bilayer made of?

Phosphate head and lipid tails

What is the function of transport proteins?

Allows larger molecules to pass through membrane

What is a selectively permeable membrane?

It allows only certain substances to pass through

What is an impermeable membrane?

It allows nothing to go through

How does the plasma membrane help maintain homeostasis?

It allows only certain substances to pass through and keeps others out.

What is osmosis?

The movement of water through semipermeable membrane

Is osmosis active or passive transport? Explain.

Passive, because no energy is involved

What happens to an animal cell placed in a hypertonic solution?

It loses water and shrinks.

What happens when an animal cell is placed in a hypotonic solution?

The cell takes in water till the membrane breaks.

What happens to a a plant cell placed in hypertonic solution?

Its cytoplasm shrinks, cell wall doesn’t.

What is diffusion?

Movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to low concentration.

How is facilitated diffusion different from normal diffusion?

Facilitated diffusion uses transport protein molecules in cell membrane to “help” molecules through.

Why do we say diffusion is a form of passive transport?

It doesn’t require energy.

How can the speed of diffusion be Increased?

Stirring or heating

How long does diffusion continue?

Till molecules reach equilibrium

What is active transport?

Movement of molecules from area of low concentration to high with the use of energy

What type energy is used in active transport?

ATP

What is exocytosis?

The movement of bulk molecules out of a cell using energy.

What is endocytosis?

The movement of bulk molecules into the cell.

What is a protein pump?

Protein pumps are transport proteins in the cell that move molecules from low to high concentration using energy.

What prevents bacteria cells from poping in a hypotonic soluton?

The cell wall

How do humans remove excess salts and water?

Kidneys

A cell has 30% salt and 70% water and is placed in a solution that has 20% salt and 80% water. What type solution is it?

Hypotonic.

Describe a cell that is in an isotonic solution.

The concentration of solutes is equal on both sides of the cell membrane.

What is plasmolysis?

Loss of water by the cell

Make your wager

Why does active transport require energy and passive transport does not?

Passive goes with the concentration gradient and active goes against the concentration gradient.
