9 Further Thinking : What message is conveyed in the story? Therefore, no matter how busy we are, please spare some time to accompany our parents! This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with them. When we grow up, we leave them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make us happy. We may think that the boy is cruel to the tree, but that’s how all of us are treating our parents.

10 Sample 1 So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He travelled many places, saw many people, and many trees, but dreams are not easy to reach. Sometimes he thought of his old apple tree , the one he used to love. But there is nothing more he can get from it. Finally, many years later the boy returned. What he saw was a dying root. “Sorry, I don’t have any apples for you to eat, branches for you to swing or trunk for you to climb on.” the tree said. “I don’t have teeth to bite, and I am too old to swing or climb,” the boy said. “I don’t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” The boy replied. “Good!” the tree drew itself to its best, “ Old tree root is the best place to lean on and rest. Come, Come sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears. (158)

11 Sample 2 So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He travelled many places, experienced many ups and downs. Going old, he missed the old apple tree more and more frequently. Moreover, he found himself doing the same for his children just like his tree: he tried his best to accompany them, working hard to earn money to buy them apples to eat, houses to live in and boats to send them away. Many years later, he returned again, but the root was gone. All he can see was an empty hole. The boy stood where the root was for a long time, then he bent down and picked up a leaf from the ground and left. Arriving home, he told his children and grandchildren the story of his apple tree and next year, they planted many apple trees in his garden. Every one has an apple tree in your garden, why don’t you go and have a look? (151)
