3 Introductions In pairs tell each other a bit about yourself e.g. –Your name. –If you've studied with the OU before. –What you are looking forward to most (hopes). –What you are worried about (fears). –An "odd fact" about yourself e.g. Star sign. Listen carefully because....... At the end we'll go round the room and you introduce the other person (their name and one thing you remember from what they told you). We'll also pool hopes and fears.

5 Aims of the Course Knowledge what is data and information? how is data represented? how do computers work? etc etc etc Thinking Skills be able to analyse a problem so that a computer can solve it be able to write a program to make a computer do something etc etc etc scheduling your time reading critically taking notes explaining things in writing communicating online finding information on the web Study Skills

9 FirstClass Conferencing An essential part of the course. For discussion and support throughout the course. You can access it using a web browser.... but...

11 Course Blocks Block 1 - learning about data –Getting data into the computer –Representing it –Storing it Block 2 - the computer: processing data –Hardware and software –Designing computer programs –Programming in JavaScript Block 3 - from data to information –Pulling it all together –Security –Multimedia –Etc

12 Assessment Computer marked exercises (CMEs) –(Self assessment) Four tutor marked assignments (TMA01 to TMA04) Final tutor marked assignment (TMA05) Computer marked assignment (CMA41) No exam!

13 Computer Marked Exercises (CMEs) For self assessment. Multiple choice questions. Do not count towards your final score. But you are strongly recommended to attempt them because. –They provide feedback about how well you understand the course concepts. –They provide practice for the CMA which does count.

14 Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) Download from the M150 website Must be completed as part of your course assessment Submitted via the eTMA system Tutor will mark them and return them to you with feedback Five TMAs (TMA01, TMA02, TMA03, TMA04, TMA05) –Submit the dummy TMA00 to get used to the system –See the study calendar (on the M150 website) for timings)

15 Computer Marked Assessment (CMA) Similar to the CMEs but does count towards your score Multiple choice questions ranging across the whole course

17 Electronic TMA (eTMA) Submission Read the booklet using the electronic TMAs system – A student guide to eTMAs Your TMA document should be readable in Microsoft Word 6 or later Submitted in a zip file Test the system first by submitting a dummy eTMA (TMA00) Don’t leave it till the last minute – the system may be swamped! Get a confirmation of receipt

27 Tma01 Due on Tuesday 14 th November Worth 15% of overall course mark Question 1 –Relates to the Study Guide, Course Companion and unit 1 Question 2 –Relates to unit 2 –Needs you to have worked in our FirstClass tutor-group conference Question 3 –Relates to unit 3 We'll have had two more tutorials here before the cut-off date.

28 TMA01 Group Exercise Read the TMA What looks most difficult? Is anything ambiguous? When could you tackle question 1? When could you tackle question 2? When could you tackle question 3? What would you do if you got stuck? What would you do if you didn't think you could make the deadline? What would happen if you got 25 marks out of 100 for this TMA?
