WS4-3 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● In this workshop, you use the Curve Manager to modify springs in a suspension analysis. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-4 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Setting up the model To set up your model: 1. Open the mdi_front_vehicle assembly in Adams/Car Standard Interface. 2. Run an opposite wheel travel analysis: ● Output Prefix: baseline ● Number of Steps: 10 ● Bump Travel: 100 ● Rebound Travel: -100 Note: Bump and rebound travel are based on default units in mm. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-5 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Modifying the spring To modify the spring: 1. Right-click either spring and select Modify. 2. In the Property File field right click and Search - acar_shared and in the file select dialog box select mdi_0001.spr file. 3. Select the Curve Manager tool. 4. Toggle the visibility of memory curve for the current data curve. 5. Right-click the Curve Math tool stack, and then select the Scale tool. 6. In the Scale Value text box, enter 1.5. 7. Select Apply. The Curve Manager highlights the new curve, scaled against the old curve (dashed line). Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-6 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Saving the spring property file To save the spring property file: 1. From the File menu, select Save As. 2. Name the file my_spring.spr. 3. Select OK. Adams/Car saves the file in your default writable database. 4. From the File menu, select Close. Adams/Car displays a dialog box that asks if you want to reference this spring property file in your model. 5. Select Yes. 6. In the Modify Spring dialog box, select OK. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-7 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Running an analysis ● Run an analysis and then, in Adams/PostProcessor, compare the results. ● To run an analysis: 1. Run an opposite wheel-travel analysis identical to the analysis named baseline, with Output Prefix named new_spring. 2. To launch Adams/PostProcessor, from the Review menu, select Postprocessing Window or press F8. Compare the results of baseline versus new_spring and make sure they make sense (for example, look at wheel rate). 3. To return to the Standard Interface, from the File menu, select Close Plot Window or press F8. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-8 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Converting to XML ● To convert the TeimOrbit file my_spring.spr to XML: 1. From the Tools menu, point to Database Management, point to Version Upgrade, and then select TeimOrbit  XML. 2. Set Convert to Single File. 3. Set File Type to spring. 4. Right-click the Property File text box, point to Search and then select /springs.tbl. 5. Double-click my_spring.spr. 6. Set To Database to acar_training. 7. Select OK. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-9 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Replacing TeimOrbit property files ● To replace your TeimOrbit spring property file with an XML property file: 1. Right-click either spring and select Modify. 2. Right-click the Property File text box, and then select /springs.tbl/ my_spring_spr.xml. Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager

WS4-10 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager ● Modifying XML property files ● To modify XML property files: 1. Select the Curve Manager/Property File Editor tool. The Property File Editor appears. 2. In the Properties tab, select the Plot/Edit Data, located to the right of Spline Data. You should see the same data that you saw in the Curve Manager. You can drag the hotpoints of the plot or edit the tabular values, just as you would in the Curve Manager. Also, note the options to import or export data, enter a generic function to define your property file, and manage the view of the plot with redraw, fit, and zoom functionality. 3. Calculate the spring rate for the nonlinear spring at 20 mm (hint: 1500/20 = 75 N/mm)

WS4-11 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation Modifying Springs with the Curve Manager 4. Experiment with these tools, and then select Cancel to exit the Curve Editor without saving your changes. 5. Change Method from Nonlinear to Linear. 6. Select the Header tab and note the units for Length and Force. 7. Select the Properties tab, and enter 75 for the Linear Rate. 8. Select Save As, and then select OK to save as my_spring_spr.xml. Unlike a TeimOrbit file, the XML property file stores both the linear and nonlinear values for this coil spring and allows you to toggle between the different types. 9. To replace the existing file, select Yes. 10. To close the Property File Editor, select Exit. 11. To accept the new spring property file, select OK.

WS4-12 ADM740, Workshop 4, June 2007 Copyright  2007 MSC.Software Corporation ● Running an analysis 1. Run an opposite wheel-travel analysis identical to the analysis named my_spring, with Output Prefix named linear. 2. Launch Adams/PostProcessor. 3. Review the results and make sure they make sense (for example, look at wheel rate). If you have time, experiment with the other features in the Curve Manager/Property File Editor.
