What is a Sonar ● A sonar is a device that uses echolocation to pick up an object. When the sound hits an object it causes the sound to bounce back louder. The word sonar means sound navigation and ranging.

Sonar Purpose ● The purppose of a sonar is to find Fish or objects that could be a potential danger. For exxample if you are out fishing you could use a fishing sonar to find a school of fish. If you are shiping goods you could use a sonar to detect icebergs, shallow water, and submarines.

Sonar History ● The first sonar type was made in 1906 by Lewis Nixon to detct icebergs. A sonar simaler ro Lewis Nixons was used in world war 1 for detecting submarines, This one was made by Paul Langévin, but sadly was not really used to help in the war effort due to he was to late to make the Sonar. This helped with future research on Sonars. In 1918 a more complex version of Sonar ws made by Britain and the US.

Sonar Definition ● The definition of sonar is a system that sends out sound waves and measures how long it takes for them to be reflected and returned as a way to detect the depth of water or to find objects under water.

Sonars and Fishing ● The way that sonars are used in fishing is the sonar makes a sound and measures how long it takes the sound to return after bouncing off the fish, and in what direction the fish is located. Fish finding sonar units send and receive signals many times per second. They concentrate sound into a beam that is transmitted from a transducer. These units include visual displays that print the echoes. They can even show 2 different fish as 2 echoes. The shape of a beam that comes out of the sonar is a cone.

Sonars and Shipping ● Practicly the only way that Sonars are used in shipping are used to detect icebergs and shallow water so that the boat does not become damaged.

GPS

GPS Purpose ● Global positioning systems, once only used for military use, have lately been used personal commercial devices, helping people do everything from find driving directions, fish and to map the earth.

GPS History ● The design of GPS is based partly on similar ground based radio navigation systems, such as LORAN and the Decca Navigator, developed in the early 1940s and used by the British Royal Navy during World War II.

GPS Definition ● Global Positioning System: a global system of U.S. navigational satellites developed to provide precise positional and velocity data and global time synchronization for air, sea, and land travel.

GPS and Fishing ● The type off GPS that is used in fishing is a fishfinder. It works by using a sonar. Sonar uses sound waves to look through the water. The sonar device then displays a picture of what's below the hull of a boat. Sound waves reflect best off objects with densities different than the water's density. So rocks, mud, metal, and the air-filled swim bladders of fish all show up well on a fishfinding device.

GPS and Shipping ● How a GPS aids in fishing is by it can guide you to were your load needs to be dropped off at. It also can help sea wise by it can record your previous routes you toke showing you a safe way to travel through the body of water you are travelling on. Also If you lose your load or it is stollen, and you have a tracker on it you could track it down using a GPS.

GPS and Shipping Continued... ● Companies that rely on drivers to make deliveries, pick up materials, go out on sales calls and perform other duties that require a business vehicle can take advantage of the GPS to boost efficiency and safety. The GPS satellite network provides data on a vehicle’s location, speed, bearing and can help companies plan better routes.

Here is a Pic showing most travelled shipping paths by sea.
