Welcome FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS Prepared by: Name enrolment no. Parmar Vishal -130450119082 Patel Hardik -130450119093 Patel Harsh -130450119095 Patel Jay -130450119099 Patel Nirav -130450119113 Guided by: Mr. Fenil Jariwala (ASST.PROF) ME,department Svmit, Bharuch Second law of thermodynamics

1.Introduction 2.Limitation of first law of thermodynamics 3.Thermal energy reservoirs 4.Heat engines 5.Heat pumps and refrigerator Second law of thermodynamics

> Limitation of the first law of thermodynamics The first law of thermodynamic state that a certain energy flow takes place when a system undergoes a process or change of state. But it does not gave any information on whether that process or change of state is possible or not. Second law of thermodynamics

Continue… According to first law in cyclic process 1) work is completely converted into heat or heat is completely converted to work 2) Potential energy can be transformed in to kinetic energy or kinetic energy can be transformed into Potential energy 3) Heat flows from hot to cold or cold to hot. Second law of thermodynamics

Continue….. Limitation of first law of thermodynamic is listed as under :- 1)First law does not help to predict whether the certain process is possible or not 2) a spontaneous process can proceed in a particular direction only.but it does not give the information if direction. Second law of thermodynamics

Continue… 3) First law not provides sufficient condition for a certain process to take place 4) First law establishes equivalence between the amount of heat used and mechanical work.but does not specify the condition under which conversion of heat into work is possible neither the direction in which heat transfer can take place Second law of thermodynamics

Continue… The second law of thermodynamic light on above limitation and may be define as “Heat can not flow itself from colder body to a hotter body.” Second law of thermodynamics

Thermal energy reservoirs A thermal energy reservoir is define as sufficiently large system in stable equilibrium that can suppily finite amount of heat without any change in it’s temp. A reservoirs that supplies energy in form of heat is called a sourse. Second law of thermodynamics
