2 OOORA – The GI Lab The GI lab is located in Mather Pavilion first floor. This venue has a waiting area and six intervention rooms. The waiting area functions as preoperative preparation and postoperative recovery room. Only monitored anesthesia care (MAC) cases are recovered here. The nurses in the GI lab perform a clinical history, check labs, and start an IV. They usually insert a 22-gauge catheter, but they will use a 20-gauge catheter for G.A. cases. The GI lab is a very busy venue and the space is limited. For this reason, as soon as the intervention room designated for a particular patient is available, he is taken to that room. Consent for the procedure is obtained in the intervention room by the GI attending or his designated fellow. The case should only be started after the patient’s consent is confirmed.

3 General anesthesia is usually performed in rooms five and six. The anesthesia machine –Datex Ohmeda Aestiva 3000– will be taken to the designated intervention room by a technician -or the anesthesia team on call- from Mather Operating Suite room 2377. This anesthesia machine contains only the bare necessities for an anesthesia procedure. A suction canister is attached to this machine; it has to be connected to the in-room suction. After general anesthesia, GI patients are taken to the Mather PACU if they are inpatients, or the MOSC PACU if they are outpatients. The workflow guidelines for these procedures are in the following slide.
