5 Why are Americans so religious?  A couple of theories: Historical legacy (Puritan settlers who emigrated from England) Rural, settler “frontier” mentality for much of U.S. history, rather than an urban mentality Religious “free market” has led to greater religious choice, “innovation”, and competition for members
