The Monkey Cup A Presentation by Jakob Helfmeier, Certified and Professional Presenter The Monkey Cup is a Carnivorous plant, meaning it actually eats the flies unlucky enough to get trapped in it's tube... http://www.botany.org/Carnivorous_Plants/

The 7 Characteristics of Life (MRS NERG) M ovement: It does move, because when a fly comes into it's tube, the lid snaps shut in under a second, which is faster than any fly can react. R eproduction: Like mostly all plants, the Monkey Cup drops it's seeds to the ground to reproduce. S ensitivity: It is sensitive to it's environment because if a fly comes into it's tube, the lid snaps shut. N utrition: As said before, the Monkey Cup eats mostly flies. E xcretion: Like all plants, it excretes oxygen, which it produces from carbon dioxide. R espiration: It breathes, like eveything else that is alive. G rowth: Yes, it does grow, because it's a plant, so it grows.

DKPCOFGS Domain: Their domain is the Eukarya because the Monkey Cup has a nucleus in it's cells or “membrane- bound organelles”. Organelle is just a fancy word for saying “a part of a cell”. Kingdom: The Monkey Cup belongs to the Kingdom of Plantae, because it is a plant. The Plantae Kingdom includes plants that produce most of their energy through photosynthesis (using sunlight). Phylum: They belong to the Phylum of the Anthophyta because they have flowers. You might not notice them because they are not as bright as those of roses, for example. Class: The Monkey Cup belongs to the class of the Dicotyledons. The plants in this class have two leaves when they have just come out of the ground. Order: The Monkey Cup is of the order of Caryophyllales because it has a fleshy stem. Family: They belong to the family of the Nepenthaceae, because they have a shallow root system and a stem that often climbs and becomes up to 15 meters in length. Genus: Their genus is the Nepenthes, because they have long, thin vines with their trap sitting on the end of it. Species: And finally, their species is Sarracenia ssp. Jonesi, because that's their scientific name, dammit!

Some Pictures Of The Monkey Cup That You Might Want To See Here is a fly that is about to be trapped and eaten by the Monkey Cup. http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2008/brown_lind/fly.htm

Some Interesting Facts About The Monkey Cup ➢ The Monkey Cup's name is "Monkey Cup" because some people have actually seen monkeys drink rainwater out of them. ➢ The Monkey Cup's pitcher is filled with sweet-smelling nectar, which the insect just can't resist. But when it comes to take a sip, it slides down a slippery slope towards death. ➢ It takes a couple of days for the Monkey Cup to digest a fly. ➢ Some carnivorous plants can hold up to 7.5 liters (2 gallons) in their pitchers. ➢ Carnivorous plants usually like wet places, but if you live in USA, you don't have to travel far to see one... ➢ Many carnivorous plants of the Genus Nepenthes have two kinds of pitchers: some on the ground to trap crawling insects and some in the air, to catch flying ones.
