OpenMath ESPRIT Project Mike Dewar NAG Ltd

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Background Consortium: –NAG, INRIA, RIACA, Springer, Bath, Ove, St. Andrews, Stilo, TCD Project Started September 1997 First Review: February 1998 Second Review: September 1998 (postponed!)

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Project Overview WP1: Standards –OpenMath standard, CDs, relationship to other activities WP2: Software Tools –OpenMath APIs, tools, applets,... WP3: Applications –Mathematical software, electronic publishing, databases,...

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 First Review Overall assessment was good Specific recommendations: –more focus on relationship with MathML –more effort on tool development –need strategy for formal standardisation –revise exploitation plans

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 MathML Alignment Broadly speaking, want to encourage: –MathML for presentation, OpenMath for content –Smooth transition from content MathML to OpenMath Berlin Meeting decided: –The 10th OpenMath Meeting (ZIB) wishes the syntax of OpenMath to converge to be MathML compliant, and the semantics to be aligned where relevant. The meeting urges the Esprit project to prepare the relevant details.

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 MathML Encoding for OpenMath Syntax trees can be very different MathML quantifiers (e.g. “bvar”) In general, MathML renderer would need extra presentation information Decided loss of linguistic purity not justified: abandoned idea

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 New Basic CDs Several new CDs –some subset contains all symbols in “old Basic” –some subset contains equivalents of all symbols in content MathML Draft versions at http://www.nag.co.uk/Projects/OpenMath More details from James Davenport tomorrow!

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 MathML Translation Tools Basic OpenMath  Content MathML –STARS (prototype available soon) reads “pseudo-TeX”, XML OpenMath & MathML renders via WebEq translates between OpenMath/Basic and content MathML

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 New Draft OpenMath Standard Specification of OpenMath objects –new OMBIND object Specification of XML & binary encodings Specification of Content Dictionaries –DTD specification Support for different type systems More details from Arjeh Cohen tomorrow!

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Other Tools LaTeX  OpenMath converter –http://www.maths.tcd.ie/pub/openmath JOME (Java OpenMath Editor) –will support direct 2D editing/manipulation –multiple clients e.g. for distance learning etc. –Java bean CD2HTML, MathML  TeX/RTF –http://www.nag.co.uk/Projects/OpenMath

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 OpenMath APIs C/C++ Aldor Java Available from INRIA (C/C++/Java) or NAG (Aldor)

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Applications: Mathematical Software “add-in” for computing Groebner bases –written in Aldor –tested with ZIB Reduce –experiments with Control CD Experimental support for OpenMath in AXIOM

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Applications: Electronic Publishing Interactive Document on Algebra (IDA) –need for some kind of cross-referencing mechanism Springer Math Active Server at Heidelberg (SMASH) –input to searching/editing tasks NAG documentation –sample chapter produced Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Formal Standardisation ISO TC184/SC4 (STEP) –Industrial Automation Systems and Integration: Industrial Data –Participants mainly high-technology and heavy engineering –Scope for use of OpenMath in EXPRESS (their data description language)

OpenMath Workshop 11 November 13 1998 Focus for next six months Tools: –translating –editing –searching –rendering Applications
