“Engaging People in CyberInfrastructure” GGF16 February 13-16, 2006

Outline History & Background EPIC Overview –Virtual Institutes –Community Building Possible Discussion items

History “EOT-PACI has created and sustained a collaborative community of computational science researchers and educators with common goals and leveraged resources. Few of these partners had interacted, much less collaborated, prior to the grant.” Project Categories (Brochure) –Professional Development –Mentoring –Learning Material Development –Software and Online Information –Youth Programs –Diversity/Accessibility –Conferences/Collaborative Experiences –Metrics & Evaluation –Online Guides and Reports

Some NSF support for EOT (unsolicited proposal) EPIC CI-TEAM –Demo projects –Large projects BPC ITEST, NSDL,…

EPIC Goal to build human capacity by creating awareness of the opportunities afforded through Cyberinfrastructure and by educating and training a diverse group of people in all stages of life from K-12 to professional practice to fully participate in the Cyberinfrastructure community as developers, users, and leaders.

EPIC Audiences K-12 Teachers and students College/University Faculty and students All disciplines, with an emphasis on math, science, engineering and technology K-12, Undergraduate and graduate students Informal Science Educators Life-long learners Administrators Researchers

EPIC Partners BioQuest Curriculum Consortium Boston University Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC) Computing Research Associates Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W) Florida International University University of Kentucky The Math Forum at Drexel Maryland Virtual High School National Center for Supercomputing Applications Oregon State University Ohio Supercomputer Center Rice University San Diego Supercomputer Center San Diego State University Shodor Education Foundation, Inc. 9 Virtual Institutes On-line venues for all interested to share ideas and work toward common goals. Current VI’s: –Access Grid in Education –Asynchronous Training –Computational Science Curriculum –Computing in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences –K-12 Education –MSI Network Research –Visualization in Education –Women and Girls and CI All are welcome to join these discussions!

Access Grid in Education This VI engages people using the Access Grid in educational projects to share their collective expertise with those considering deployment and/or use of Access Grid technology.Access Grid Contacts: Jennifer Teig von Hoffman (jtvh@bu.edu)jtvh@bu.edu Edee Wiziecki (edeew@ncsa.uiuc.edu)edeew@ncsa.uiuc.edu

Asynchronous Training This VI will monitor discussion spaces and support existing online courses identify institutions that make use of the existing "Intro to MPI" course for curriculum development, work with instructors, and make course improvements; and identify new courses, materials, and courseware. existing online courses Contact: Leslie Southern (leslie@osc.edu)leslie@osc.edu

Evaluation

Computational Science Curriculum This VI is focused on identifying existing computational sciences degree programs and student learning outcomes. The VI will evaluate existing on-line degree programs, on-line computational sciences for-credit courses, and on-line not-for-credit tutorials. The VI will create and deploy high quality on-line computational sciences courses and tutorials that meet the needs of the computational sciences education community. Contact: Greg Moses (moses@engr.wisc.edu)moses@engr.wisc.edu

Computing in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences This VI engages humanists, artists, and social scientists in sustained collaboration with colleagues in computer science, engineering, and high performance computing and communications. The emphasis will be to leverage opportunities for technology transfer among and between the sciences and engineering, on the one hand, and humanities, arts, and social science, on the other. Contact: Vernon Burton (vburton@ncsa.uiuc.edu)vburton@ncsa.uiuc.edu

K-12 Education This VI will conduct monthly meetings, and will discuss how to market the opportunity to participate among EPIC participants, K-12 faculty, Students, Parents, Administrators, and professional groups including the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). ISTE Contact: Cynthia Lanius (cynthia@mathform.org)cynthia@mathform.org

MSI Network Research This VI will engage various disciplines and people across the nation in how specific disciplines are utilizing cyberinfrastructure in Research and Development, Education and Learning, Dissemination of scholarly activities, establishing new partnerships, and overall Academic Globalization. Contact: Amado Gonzalez (Amado.Gonzalez@fiu.edu)Amado.Gonzalez@fiu.edu http://www.eng.fiu.edu/agvi/

Visualization in Education This VI will address how having rich, 3-D, immersive environments for learning will enhance teaching and learning in math and science. The group will demonstrate the possibilities of this approach. Contact: Ed Boyce (edboyce@bu.edu)edboyce@bu.edu

Women and Girls and CI This VI focuses on gender issues across the spectrum: K-12, undergrad, grad, professional, and curriculum bias, etc. The group will work together to identify goals and objectives. Contact: Rozeanne Steckler (steckler@nacse.org)steckler@nacse.org
