2 Introduction Technology is everywhere in our society, and it is important for both teachers and students be responsible in their use of informational technologies. Mastery of this 21 st century skill is critical for everyone to learn in order to be safe both on and off line.

3 Computer Safety Online Always use passwords for both hardware and software Make passwords different for each device and application Use a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers, and symbols Update software frequently—these patches protect your information and your computer Be sure to use anti-virus/anti-spyware software Never click on pop-ups or open email from a questionable source Never include personal information in emails Back-up your data

4 Computer Safety Online Never give your Social Security number over the Internet Be careful who you give personal information to, such as: telephone number, email, address When making purchases online, make sure the address starts with https:// to be secure Limit the amount of cookies your computer will accept Maintain two email addresses: one for business and one for everything else Regularly run your anti-virus scans to protect your computer and yourself.

5 Computer Safety Offline Computers should be placed on a firm surface to avoid accidentally knocking it off onto the floor Cords should be safely tucked away to avoid tripping In vest in a security cable if laptop/computer is vulnerable to theft Purchase hardware through the district to make sure it is compatible with other hardware Never open your computer’s case—this could result in permanent damage to your computer or electrical shock to you!

6 Social Networking Do’s & Don’ts Do’s Be careful who you accept as a friend Be aware that information uploaded to the Internet has the potential to be permanent Be aware that not everyone is who they say they are Don’ts Don’t give out personal information Don’t use social Networking websites at work

7 Ethical Use of Internet Material Even though surfing the Internet seems free and easy… There are no freebies! Always give credit to those whose material you use in your own papers and presentations!

8 Copyright Guidelines— Images/Photos/Drawings Images: Always give credit to the creator of the media Images can be downloaded from all search engines by accessing the “Creative Commons” tab after the initial images search Creative Commons will tell students how to cite the images and possibly allow them to modify the image Respect their wishes as far as whether an image can be used commercially, or not Photographs or Drawings: Up to 5 graphics or photos from the same person No more than 15 images from the same collection Images cannot be changed

9 Copyright Guidelines—Videos and Music Videos: May use up to 3 minutes but no more than 10% of entire video The video clip may not be changed in any way Music: Up to 30 seconds but no more than 10% of sheet music Up to 30 seconds but no more than 10% of a recording The music cannot be changed in any major way

10 Copyright Guidelines Writing from a book, magazine, etc.: Up to 100 words, but not more than 10% of the book or article may be quoted Poems: Up to 250 words (or the entire poem if less than 250 words) No more than 3 poem by the same poet No more than 5 poems from a collection of poetry

11 Checking for Plagiarism Things to look for in a student’s presentation/project/paper: Elevated or professional language from a student in a research paper Ideas that are much more advanced than the level of the student A change in font A high percentage of similarity to other papers in an electronic plagiarism checker database, such as Turnitin.com

12 How to Cite to Avoid Plagiarism Always give credit where credit is due Cite where you got your information, images, ideas in a bibliography Follow the proper format for the source Basic information: Author/creator. Title. Source. Date. URL.
