LINUX ADMIN CERTIFICATION PART OF THE CISCO AAT DEGREE DRAFT PROPOSAL

Backstory: Cisco AAT Degree ■NTEC discontinued Cisco CCNP networking courses from the Cisco AAT degree –Loss of the CCNP courses left a 24 credit (32 clock hour) hole in the degree requirements. –NTEC Advisory and teaching faculty have been working to identify new trends and needs within the network technology field to add to the Cisco AAT degree. –Cisco AAT degree is primarily certification based and identified skills needs of Linux posed research into available Linux industry certifications ■5 Year Plan: Cisco AAT degree will be offered as a 100% online option –In order to attain this goal all courses within the degree need to be available in a fully online delivery.

Need for Certification based Linux: As Part of a Network Administrator Degree ■The expansion of open source is redefining IT job roles by requiring Linux skills. ■Knowledge of Linux is an important differentiator for business and IT professionals interested in big data, cloud computing, cybersecurity, information systems, networking, programming, software development, and more. ■Career pathways include: –Network engineer –Software developer –Linux administrator –Technical support –Network administrator –Device support –Device field engineer

Evaluating: Other Linux Training Options ■Existing CTEC UNIX courses at Clark College –Not certification based –Not offered in an online format –Not specifically targeted to a Cisco network administrator (not integrated with Cisco CCNA coursework) ■IBM Mainframe Linux –Specialized to vertical markets not representative of area employer base. –Not specifically targeted to a Cisco network administrator (not integrated with Cisco CCNA coursework)

Evaluating: Other Linux Training Options ■Red Hat –High startup and ongoing costs –Questionable quality and high costs to the learning materials –Not structured well for online delivery of course content, especially labs ■CompTIA Linux+ –We liked this one, well known/respected, and wide range of curriculum options –Turns out it is entirely based on the LPI curriculum we have available to use for no cost through our Cisco Academy program

Overview: LPI Linux Training ■Co-developed with Cisco and offered through the Cisco Network Academies, it is specifically targeted to a Cisco network administrator (integrated with Cisco CCNA coursework) ■Turnkey curriculum 100% online, and with no cost to student for course materials ■Hands-on lab centric learning ■Industry certification focused that is entirely vendor neutral Linux ■240 contact hours of training split into three courses: –Linux Essentials –Linux Admin 1 –Linux Admin 2

Linux Courses: Certifications ■Each course tracks to industry certifications –LPI (Linux Professional Institute) –https://www.lpi.org/certification/https://www.lpi.org/certification/ –CompTIA Linux+ –https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/linuxhttps://certification.comptia.org/certifications/linux ■100% Online courses ■Extensive lab/lecture format ■Predeveloped by LPI for Cisco Network Academies ■Lecture content will need to be developed by us Note: An LPIC3 course will NOT be offered initially.

Course 1: Linux Essentials – NTEC 151 (6 credits) ■This course is designed for learners who are beginning to build Linux knowledge for a career in IT. ■Learn basic Linux system administration skills: using the command line, how to configure a computer running Linux, and basic networking. –Learn basic open source concepts. –Understand how Linux is used and the basics of the command line. –Apply skills using Linux virtual machine with step-by-step and hands-on lab activities. –Build foundational knowledge for progressively mastering Linux commands. –Connect with the global Cisco Networking Academy community. ■This is a 70-80 contact hour lab/lecture course offered 100% online ■No prerequisite skills required

Linux Administrator Courses ■These will be a 2-course series for aspiring Linux system administrators. Develop proficiency in performing maintenance tasks on the command line, installing and configuring a computer running Linux, and configuring basic networking, using virtual machines running Linux. ■Learn basic Linux system administration skills and prepare for the LPI LPIC-1 and/or CompTIA Linux+ certifications.

Course 2: Linux Admin 1 – NTEC 251 (6 credits) ■This course prepares students for certification Exam 101, and covers the following: –system architecture –Linux installation and package management –GNU and UNIX commands –Devices –Linux file systems –File system hierarchy standards ■This is a 70-80 contact hour lab/lecture course offered 100% online ■Prerequisite will be Course 1 (NTEC 151)

Course 3: Linux Admin 2 – NTEC 252 (6 credits) ■This course prepares students for certification Exam 102, and covers the following: –Shells –Scripting and data management –Interfaces and desktops –Administrative tasks –Essential system services –Networking fundamentals –Security ■This is a 70-80 contact hour lab/lecture course offered 100% online ■Prerequisite will be Course 2 (NTEC 251)
