Recap Activity Reflection Angles

Recap Activity Refraction Angles

Student Reading Activity A brief history of a hero of science… Occupation: Scientist and Inventor Born: March 14,1879 Ulm, in Germany Died: 18 April 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey Best known for: Theory of Relativity and E=mc 2 Einstein quote “You never fail until you stop trying.” Albert Einstein was born on the 14th of March 1879 and died on the 18th of April 1955. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, Einstein made many contributions to the field of theoretical physics. Even when very young, Einstein showed great ability in both math’s and science. He was naturally curious and had a brilliant analytical mind. He produced perhaps one of the most famous equations ever: E = mc² (energy equals mass multiplied by the speed of light squared).

Learning Activity Einstein's Experiment Trial Einstein’s Experiment Place a light box aiming directly at a glass prism. On the opposing side of the prism place a piece of white paper. Turn the light box on and gradually adjust the angle that the white light enters the prism. See what happens. Complete the conclusion below about Einstein’s experiment. “When white light enters a glass prism…”

Teacher Explanation White Light and Prisms Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain Learning Activity In the second part to Einstein’s experiment, he tried to split the colours using a second prism. See whether you can split the light again and then add your findings onto your conclusion.

Key Word Alert! Light Spectrum White light can be split into a light spectrum, which is made up of a range of different colours from red all the way to violet.

Lv4: Describe how to make a light spectrum. Lv5: Explain how light filters work. Lv6: Analyse Einstein’s prism experiment. Einstein's Prisms Entrance Activity Key terms Prism Light spectrum Light filters White light Dispersion Albert Einstein Born: 1879 Died: 1955 E=mc 2 Make a prediction, when do you think Einstein was born? 9 A filter absorbs some colours of white light and lets other colours through to create coloured light. A red filter absorbs all colours… …apart from red light. A blue filter absorbs all colours… …apart from blue light. A green filter absorbs all colours... …apart from green light. Teacher Explanation Seeing Colours

A magenta filter absorbs all colours… …apart from red and blue. A cyan filter absorbs all colours… …apart from green and blue. A yellow filter absorbs all colours... …apart from red and green. Teacher Explanation Seeing Colours

Learning Activity Complete the paragraph below White light is made up of a _______ of different colours. When white light passes through a ______ some of the colours are ______ by the filter. But some colours are able to pass through the filter. A red filter will absorb_____, _____, ______, _____, _____, ____, and allow ______ to pass through it.
