Joe’s 2007 ATLAS software validation Formal software validation groups set up in early 2007 Technical validation - make sure it compiles + runs without errors Physics validation - check that Physics content is ok. Biweekly Physics validation phone meetings with ~ 20 participants. I am Top Physics coordinator. Not very sexy work, but challenging. Datasets available for analysis only at last minute, but tight deadlines. Important to ensure quality of ATLAS software. Credit from OTSMOU (Operation Task Sharing and Maintenance & Operation Update). Developers do take note + fix bugs quickly. Group web pages Need to ensure that form and content are ready for the RAE. Glossaries Grid Acronym Soup (GAS) seems to be widely used. ATLAS Acronym Glossary on our Wiki. Coffee club Good Physics needs Coffee! Membership costs ≈ 1 espresso/week from Error Bar. 2008 I will retire in autumn 2008.

Jenna Lane Second year ATLAS PhD student supervised by Un-Ki Yang and Fred Loebinger. For analysis, doing a charged Higgs search, working with Fred, Un-Ki, Jo Pater and Paul Miyagawa. Recently started working on trigger validation with Stefan Ask and Jiri Masik. Trigger Validation Currently learning how to run Athena. Eventually will work on muon validation in the event filter (the highest level part of the ATLAS trigger system).

Charged Higgs From Top Decays bjet t t H+ W- e/  Di-jet Considering top pair decays in the lepton + jets channel. Looking for events where one top quark decays as (t -> H + b) Signature: 1 high Pt lepton, large MET, 4 jets. Looking for a second peak in the reconstructed W mass (di-jet) distribution. H + is a good candidate at low tan . Main background is the Standard Model top decay (t -> W + b) Using a chi squared fitting routine to select the correct di-jet and improve the resolution of the mass peaks.

Monte Carlo production Detector simulation, digitisation and reconstruction using Manchester Tier-2 –H +  c sbar –Wbb –Wγγ 21 December 2007 Manchester HEP Christmas meeting 2007 Paul Miyagawa

Top physics MC validation Aiding Joe Foster Converting validation code from using soon-to-be obsolete ntuple format to permanent format 20 December 2007Manchester HEP Christmas meeting 2007 Paul Miyagawa

Charged Higgs analysis Produced standard ntuples with overlap (between electrons, muons + jets) removal performed Validation of Monte Carlo samples Started study of sources of extra jets 21 December 2007 Manchester HEP Christmas meeting 2007 Paul Miyagawa

Sorry I cannot make the meeting this time … … I had a series of conflicting meetings over the last weeks: Thorsten Wengler X-mas meeting December 2007 Anna (taking minutes) Leo (reviewing progress)

What I have been up to and plans in 1 page … Moved from ATLAS L1-trigger coordinator to Deputy ATLAS-wide run coordinator => Run coordinator for first running period next year [This will take the bulk of my time next year (and already did over last months)] Still involved in ATLAS trigger configuration (Paul, Simon) and more loosely in High Level Trigger software (Stefan, Jiri, James / Un-ki, Jenna), but resigned official functions in trigger project in July’07 Top analysis (x-section, spin, trigger efficiencies) with Simon, Attila, Christian. T5 trigger note (passed on editorship to D. Berge) to be finalised in early 2008. ATLAS TDAQ system on Manchester GRID farm (A. Forti, S. Wheeler, H. Garitaonandia, J. Masik) - prototype demonstrated and reported at several conferences - now implementing for ATLAS regular use Finally published my last two OPAL papers: hadron and single jet production in two-photon collisions (presented at EPS in Manchester) in PLB Consolidating ATLAS group effort at CERN: Now Stefan, Paul, Jiri, Simon, James (mostly theory with Mike) resident on LTA in new double office with video conference facility, speaker phones, desk for travellers. [We are having a very noticeable impact on ATLAS in trigger configuration, HLT software, MC verification and physics analysis from people at Manchester & CERN!] Started project looking at diffractive upsilon/Z production with Jeff/Brian to see if we can trigger/accept enough events to make a viable analysis (for me just starting up after project on previous page is coming under control …)
