1 Welcome to the Third Grade Curriculum Night

2 All About Me This is my 16 th year teaching. I am married, and I have two children. Rylee is 11, and Brady is 8. We have 2 dogs – Libby & Tucker I love to read, take pictures, shop, and travel!

3 Guided Reading Small-group reading instruction based on students needs. (Flexible Grouping!) Books used in groups are based on students reading level. Other students will be independently reading and working on independent reading activities. Weekly Reading Logs DEAR time / Reading Conferences

4 Guided Reading cont… Goals: –First quarter = N –Second quarter = O –Third Quarter = P –Fourth Quarter = P+ –Read for 40 minutes independently

5 Word Study/Word Work Small group instruction Sorting activities Tests Spellingcity.com = a HUGE resource ( Search under teacher name – Becky Joy ) Focus on independent word-solving High Frequency words

6 Writer’s Workshop Daily minilessons and independent writing, with student-teacher conferences. Work on personal narratives, informational writing, opinion writing, and fairy tales. We will also spend some time on writing letters and poetry Emphasis on the writing process

7 Math Hands-on activities with manipulatives Differentiated instruction Math journal –thinking and writing about math VOCABULARY Short chapters – frequent tests Math Stations Study Guides Pre-assessments given before each lesson to help with math groups

8 ALEKS Online tool that supplements curriculum Used as a Station Occasionally given for homework

9 Science/Social Studies We will spend ~3 weeks on Social Studies, and will then switch and spend ~3 weeks on Science. Science –hands-on activities: Water Cycles and Clouds, Moon Phases & the Earth, EcoSystems, Plants, and Matter & Energy Social Studies – Concepts are Community and Geography, America’s Early Communities, Changes over Time, Community Government, Making Economic Choices, and Celebrating People and Cultures.

10 Grading Scale A= 95%-100% A- = 90%-94% B+ = 87%-89%B= 84%-86%B- = 80%-83% C+ = 77%-79%C= 74%-76%C- = 70%-73% D+ = 67%-69%D=64%-66%D-= 60%-63% F= 59% and below

12 Genius Hour Passion Projects Weekly time to work Starting in September

13 Take Home Folder Check assignment notebook each night for homework / upcoming tests – sign please Please Remove – look through & empty Please Return – this section needs to be checked, completed, and returned

14 Homework Read, read, and read some more – at least 20 minutes per night!!! A Reading Log sheet will be sent home every week. It needs to be completed and returned the following week on Monday. 5 nights of reading is required. Study Word Study words Additional Homework could include writing and math – never both on the same night!

15 Behavior Expectations As a class we will develop expectations for our year together! If a student chooses not to follow an agreed upon expectation, a fair consequence will be given. Consequences are handled on an individual basis between student and teacher. Approach from Teaching with Love and Logic by Jim Fay & David Funk A weekly report will be sent home on Fridays, & need to be returned on Mondays.

17 Have You Filled A Bucket Today? We will use this book to guide our behavior, and help us to follow the 7 Habits, as we show that we can be “bucket fillers” not “bucket dippers.” Bucket Filler Recognitions Marbles & Quarterly Goals

18 Mystery Reader Someone special to each child is welcome to come visit our class, and share a book with them. Fridays at 10:45, beginning in October. Please sign up tonight, or send back the sheet with open dates that was sent home on Aug. 21 st. Reminder notes will be sent home the week before the Mystery Reader visits. SHHH! It is a surprise to the students on who is coming each Friday!

19 Leader of the Week Monday: Posters and Sharing Sack Tuesday: Bring your favorite book to share Wednesday: Bring a letter from home (sealed) to be read to you and your friends Thursday: Lunch Buddy – eat with the teacher Friday: Share your Poster ***List on the website of the dates, if needed.***

20 Schedule Block: 9:45 to 10:35 Lunch / Recess: 12:50 to 1:35
