Keeping Our Promise An overview of community benefit Prepared for the Fort Worth City Council May 11, 2010

The Cook Children’s Promise Knowing that every child's life is sacred, it is the Promise of Cook Children's to improve the health of every child in our region through the prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury.

Key Community Benefit Programs ▲ Neighborhood Clinics (NHC) ▲ Safe Kids Tarrant County ▲ Homelessness Initiative ▲ Oral Health Coalition ▲ Save a Smile ▲ Community-wide Children’s Health & Planning Survey (CCHAPS)

Giving Back to Our Community In FY 2008, Cook Children’s spent over $60 million in community benefit -- far more than we would pay in taxes if we were a for-profit entity. It’s not about the bottom line. It’s about keeping a promise.

Cook Children’s Neighborhood Clinics: The Right Care at the Right Place ▲ The number of primary care visits to NHCs instead of the Emergency Department (ED) has more than doubled in the last four years. ▲ After doubling in 2008, primary care visits to the ED leveled out in 2009.

Neighborhood Clinics Save Money ▲ The average difference between a visit charge at an ED and an NHC is $444. ▲ Over the last four years, an average of 10,570 visits have been diverted from the ED to a NHC per year. This represents $4.7 million less in ED charges annually.

Clinics Mean Fewer ED Visits
