The Plan for the Summer July – What the Bible teaches about Evangelism August – How to practically reach out to Others

Matthew 28 – Jesus is Risen Matthew 28:1-8 – God opened the tomb to show that Jesus was risen Matthew 28:9-10 – Jesus set up a meeting in Galilee Matthew 28:11-15 – A lie to deny the resurrection Matthew 28:16-20 – Jesus gives His followers a goal to aim for Matthew 28:16 – The disciples went to Galilee Mathew 28:17 – They saw Jesus and worshipped, but some doubted Matthew 28:18-20 – Jesus told them to make disciples

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:16 – The disciples went to Galilee to meet Jesus Matthew 28:10 – Jesus had told the women to tell His disciples to go to Galilee. Jesus would meet them there “into Galilee” – They obeyed what Jesus had told them to do “which Jesus appointed for them” – This was the location where they would meet with Jesus

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:17 – The disciples saw Jesus and they worshipped “When they saw Him” – Jesus was risen from the dead and the disciples did see Him again “they worshipped Him” – They were overcome to see the one who had been crucified alive again. “but some doubted” – The resurrection still seemed impossible to some. Were they only seeing a vision? That was their kind of doubt.

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:18-20 – Jesus had an important command to leave with His disciples. They were to make more disciples. Matthew 28:18 – Jesus had received authority in heaven and on earth Matthew 28:19-20 – In light of this authority, Jesus commanded His disciples with the task of making more disciples

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:18 – Jesus was given authority “All authority” – Authority is the right and power that belongs to the king to rule and command. Jesus was the Messiah. “has been given Me” – God gave this authority to Jesus. Clearly, God the Father is exempted from this blanket statement. “in heaven and on earth” – Jesus can command on earth and in heaven. In both places, He is to be obeyed just like God.

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:19-20 – Jesus commanded to make disicples “Therefore” – With all of this authority, how should Jesus’ disciples respond to the following words? “Make disciples” – Jesus commands that disciples make more disciples. “Disciples” – What kind of “disciple”? The rest of the verse indicates the answer.

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:19-20 – Jesus commanded to make disciples “go” – When they go, wherever they go, they are to make disciples “baptize” – How to make a disciple? By baptising. Agreeing with the doctrine and joining the community of Jesus’ followers. This touches on salvation, and initial baby steps in the faith. (Faith) “teach to observe” – How to finish making a disciple? By teaching them to observe everything that Jesus commanded. (Obedience)

Jesus gave His Disciples a Goal Matthew 28:19-20 – Jesus commanded to make disciples “I am with you” – Along with the command, which will be difficult, Jesus promises His power and presence “always” – There is not any time when Jesus is not with His disciples. This is a great comfort. “even to the end of the age” – There will never be any era when Jesus will not be with His disciples.
