2 GEOGRAPHY Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. It’s an island. It’s situated in the west of Europe. It’s washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. There are a lot of rivers and lakes, valleys and forests, rocks and hills. Its landscape is very picturesque. The weather is usually wet and foggy. Great Britain has borders with France, Ireland and other European countries.

3 SYMBOLS The flag of Great Britain is red, white and blue. The British people call it “the Union Jack” The coat of arms of Great Britain has a crown on the shield, because it’s a monarchy. The shield is supported by the English lion and by the Unicorn of Scotland.

4 THE ROYAL FAMILY The queen of Great Britain is Elizabeth the Second. Her official residence is Buckingham Palace. The palace was built in the 18 th century. Her elder son is Charles. Charles also has two sons, William and Harry.

10 London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is situated on the Thames river. It is the largest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world. LONDON

11 Trafalgar Square There are always a lot of people and pigeons on the square. Every winter there is a big Christmas tree which is a gift from Norway in the middle of the square. On New Year’s Eve people gather around the tree. In the middle of the square there is Admiral Nelson’s Column.

18 British Holidays There are a number of holidays, which are celebrated in Great Britain every year. One of them is, of course, New Year's Day on the first of January. It is not so popular in England as in our country, but it is rather popular in Scotland. On that day people usually visit their friends and there is a lot of dancing and eating. In Scotland people bring a piece of coal for good luck in the New Year.

19 British Holidays April Fool’s Day or all Fool’s Day is the first of April. Today, April Fool’s jokes are played mostly by children, who enjoy the holiday very much. In April there is Easter. At Easter children eat chocolate Easter eggs. Sometimes parents hide them in the house or in the garden and children have to look for them.

20 British Holidays In June there is Father's Day. On Father's Day children give or send their fathers and grandfathers cards and presents. On the 31st of October there is Halloween. They say ghosts and witches come out on Halloween. People make lanterns out of pumpkins. Some people have Halloween parties and dress as witches and ghosts.

21 British Holidays On Christmas everybody puts the presents under the Christmas tree. People say that at night Father Christmas puts presents into the stockings which children usually hang on their beds. The traditional Christmas meal is roast turkey and Christmas pudding. The 25th of December is Christmas Day. It is one of the people's favourite holidays. People put Christmas trees in their houses and decorate them. There are beautiful Christmas decorations in the streets.

22 Tea Customs Afternoon Tea: – Served at 4 in the afternoon – Tea, coffee, freshly baked scones, tea sandwiches, and assorted pastriespastries – This became popular about one hundred and fifty years ago when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for an afternoon cup of tea High Tea: – Served at 6 in the evening – Scones, cakes, buns or tea breads, cheese on toast, toasted crumpets, cold meats and pickles or poached eggs on toast – British working population did not have afternoon tea, only a midday meal and a meal after work – a.k.a dinner or supper (Source)Source
