Why monitor individual cows directly? 为什么要监控每头奶牛?
Modern farming – No personal contact 现代牧场-无法对每头牛进行一对一的管理 Milk recording only – Drop in production is only a symptom 只依赖奶量数据-奶产量下降是唯一信号 Visual observation – Possible? Practical? Accurate? 肉眼观察—是否可行及精确? A herd is a sum of its parts. Each cow influences overall herd production. But each cow is an asset – rather than removing non-producers from the herd, it is better to realize that individual cow’s maximum potential, to maximize overall herd productivity. 牧群是每头奶牛的综合,每头奶牛都是资产且对提升全群产量都起着作用。与其淘汰牧场的低产牛,不如充分挖掘每头奶牛的最大产奶潜能,提升全群的产量。 Monitoring individual cows (vs. observing the whole herd) is an effective way to address the overriding challenges we just talked about. Modern Farming: - Modern farming doesn't provide the same personal contact that dairy farmers used to enjoy. Therefore the modern dairyman has to rely on technology to replace the intimate proximity of a farmer spending many hours with just a few cows. This is true for heat detection as well as health monitoring. Without technology, they don’t really know what the status of their cows is: Are they in heat? Are they sick? Have they eaten enough? Are they suffering from something? Milk Recording – Many milk producers count on the milking recording systems for cow monitoring (“if something is wrong with my cow, I will see the milk production drop”). Identification and periodic milk recording enable very efficient genetic improvement in the milk production of the dairy cow. Inline milk recording enables constant herd monitoring and identification of cows in need of attention within a larger population of cows. However, the problem with milk production as a sensor for the wellbeing of the cow is that milk production is a symptom, and in the case of a production drop, it can be a result of a problem that began several days before. Visual observation – Visual observation used to be the common method for cow heat detection, wellbeing and monitoring. Farmers used to watch their cows for a few hours a day for heat detection and to learn about their wellbeing. BUT: Is it feasible? Is it really that good a tool? How accurate is it? How much time does it take every day? Can farmers analyze these observations? What happens during the night? (Remembering that a significant share of heats occur overnight.) Who watches the cows? What about silent heat? (77% of cows in first estrus cycle display only secondary heat characteristics.) – It’s clear: observation is not enough! In addition to the overriding challenges we talked about in the previous slide, there are also pressing, daily challenges that dairy farmers struggle with. Let’s review them now.

SCR Heatime® System series SCR Heatime® 系列产品 SCR Heatime Pro System 软件版独立式发情健康监控系统 SCR Heatime HR System 终端版独立式发情健康监控系统 Standalone terminal-based system that provides a complete reproduction and health monitoring solution, with no PC required. The intuitive operation and low maintenance system enable you and your employees to work more efficiently and with confidence. PC-based powerful cow monitoring solution that provides a practical tool for decision making based on unique data and actionable cow intelligence information. The SCR Heatime Pro system creates an advanced, centralized solution for reproduction and health monitoring. Infrared (IR) System红外传输系统 The two operating systems are identical from the activity and rumination monitoring perspective. Both systems are working with the same tags and algorithms however the data processing is different: The SCR Heatime HR system is a terminal based solution with easy to use, simple and straight forward interface. It has limited capacity of tags management (up to 1,000 tags) and its management capabilities are limited – less reports, minor customization etc. The SCR Heatime Pro system is based on PC process and as such has much more extended capabilities: the user interface, data processing and reports are a real management tool in the hands of the farmer. Practically it has no limit on capacity of tags, it enable multi users access, customizations and multi herds management. Radio Frequency (RF) System 无线传输系统

heat detection 发情监测 We will now look at the functionality of the heat detection system when the cows measure the activity only (no rumination measurement). Let’s start with a short background on heat detection

高效繁育的重要性:带来新的泌乳高峰,提升产量
The importance of efficient reproduction: Bringing on the next lactation 高效繁育的重要性:带来新的泌乳高峰,提升产量 Fewer “open days” 缩短空怀期 More milk production 提升奶产量 More calving 更多犊牛 Increase and improve herd 扩张和改善牧群规模 Saves time and labor 节省时间和人力 Reduces expenses on semen and vet treatments 节省冻精和兽医治疗成本 The reason that reproductive efficiency is one of the most critical aspects of a profitable herd is that there are very real economic losses resulting from delayed reproduction. • The lifetime milk production of the cows is reduced – with each estrus cycle in which conception does not occur, the onset of the next lactation is delayed. Because milk production is highest at the beginning of lactation, more time spent in late lactation means a lower lifetime economic efficiency. • The number of calves born per calving interval decreases, giving fewer opportunities to cull cows with low milk production and slowing the possible gain in genetic value of the herd. • The direct costs for treatment of reproductive disorders, breeding and veterinary fees is increased. In order to increase the lifetime milk production we want the cow to calve as often as possible. Ideally, we wish all cows to concieve at the first estrus cycle following a voluntary waiting period which begins after the cow calves and ends (typically) 60 days after calving . A comparison between two cows, one cow conceiving at her first estrus cycle, the second conceiving on her second estrus cycle (conception illustrated by yellow star) shows that the cow conceiving on the first cycle will produce more milk. during that year. This production gap will increase with time. The next slide illustrates the higher cost of each additional open day.
6
Why is it important to inseminate on time? 为什么及时配种很重要
Cost per Extra Day Open (Adapted from De Vries, A., University of Florida) Each open day that passes has a higher economic price tag in the form of lost milk production, lost calf sales and lost cow sales, as well as additional labor costs, veterinary costs, heifer purchase costs, breeding costs and feed costs. Note: Costs detailed in this graph are relevant to the US dairy industry. It is important to look not only at the average number of open days for the herd, but also the spread of open days by individual cow. Two farms that have a similar average number of open days can have significantly different costs depending on whether the majority of cows have a lower or higher number of open days. We can see here that the cost of each open day begins to rise sharply after approximately the 120th day. So, the more individual cows in the herd that have a low number of open days, the lower the total costs will be.

A short window of opportunity for AI 配种时间窗口 Hours from Peak 距离发情高峰时间 8 16 Ovulation排卵 28-30 26 Best AI Time 最佳配种时间 AI Time 配种时间 Activity Peak活动量高峰 A key reason that heat detection is so important – and also so hard to get right – is that the window of opportunity is quite small. Ovulation usually occurs approximately 28 to 30 hours after the cow’s heat peaks. And the optimal fertility of ova is projected to be between 6 and 12 hours after ovulation. Although insemination can be done anytime from the time of peak heat until a few hours before ovulation, conception rates are highest when cows are inseminated 8 to 16 hours after peak – i.e. from 24 to 6 hours before ovulation. The precise timing of insemination is critical to ensure the highest likelihood of conception. Because of these incredibly tight windows, the key issue in effective insemination timing is determining the time at which heat is at it’s highest, and to start counting hours from that point. The next slide shows the actual conception results on 4 farms that used the SCR system to identify the optimal time to inseminate.

It can be seen that the highest conception rates across the 4 farms were achieved when the insemination was performed 8 to 16 hours from the activity peak. Even inseminating 16 to 24 hours after activity peak provides, on an average, conception rates of over 35%. Inseminations that were performed before the peak resulted in lower conception rates. This is actually the time that an alert farmer would see the first observational signs of heat! Hours from peak of weighted activity to insemination Source: SCR research

Specifically: Rumination is the most reliable sign of a happy and – more importantly – healthy cow. Cows normally ruminate for an average of minutes per day; each cow has her own individual rumination habits and a change in her regular rumination is almost always meaningful. Rumination is the result of what the cow has eaten and how well she has been able to rest. It has been shown that it can serve as a very early indicator of future calving diseases, and as an early indicator for diseases like mastitis. When rumination drops this is a clear sign that the cow is uncomfortable and probably not well – or, in open cows, it is a sign of heat. A drop in rumination minutes is often seen before any drop in production. Management and nutritional changes affecting a group or the whole herd can be monitored and managed by monitoring the rumination averages and patterns of groups and the whole herd. Rumination has been shown to change by ration components, the physical characteristics of the ration and general management. Constant rumination monitoring and management can therefore optimize not only the individual lactation curve but also the whole herd production curve.

The Health Report 健康报告 SCR Heatime® Heatime HR: Health report:
The system provides a health report based on rumination time and activity changes. It lists the cows with low rumination and enable the user , by one click, to get reports and graphs for each low ruminating cow. Cow 794 – There is a sharp decrease in rumination, indicating acute onset of sickness Cow 2736 – This is a cow that calved a few days ago; we calculate their health index differently than cows that are 14 days after calving. We pay more attention to these cows. Cow 70 – This is a cow that has been deteriorating gradually in her rumination in the last 3 days. Heatime Pro The system is designed with a goal of saving time- there is no need to scroll through each and every cow to find the cows that need managerial attention. We provide 2 main reports that you need to use on a daily basis- the “Health Report” and “Cows Ready for AI “ report. These reports display only the cows that deviate from the normal are flagged by these report This is the first report – the Health Report. This monitors the changes in activity and rumination – we look at any drops in activity, any drops in rumination, and the absolute number of minutes the cow is ruminating. This data is processed by algorithms that create a health index for every cow in the herd. A score of 100 is a perfectly healthy cow – 0 is either a dead cow, or a dead battery! Should a cow’s score drop to below 85 for any reason, we flag them for you, and bring them into the report. A score of is color coded white – cows that might be having an off day. If there is suddenly a large number of “off day” cows, then there is some group or herd wide issue that the farmer needs to consider. A score of is color coded yellow – these are cows that you should take a look at, that day, but it’s not urgent. Any score of 75 or below – go see the cow now! There are four parameters to bring a cow into the health report: If she’s a fresh cow, during that first week, to look at her recovery rate. If she’s not recovering according to pre set expectation levels, she will appear on the report. If a cow’s rumination drops significantly on a single day, she will appear in the report If a cow has small insignificant drops over multiple days, she will appear in the report (perhaps there’s a gradual issue she’s experiencing that needs attention). If the absolute number of rumination minutes is below 250 a day, she will appear in the report. Health application: 健康管理: Getting the most out of lactation 充分挖掘泌乳期潜能
Lactation curves 泌乳期曲线 Milk (in lbs) Let’s look at the current lactation: We can all agree that getting to the highest possible peak in production and minimizing drops in milk production means more milk production and more money in the Producers pocket. How do we get there? The current lactation actually begins during the dry period. Broadly researched and conclusively arrived at: it’s all about dry matter intake. Fresh Cows- In order to achieve the highest possible peak within the shortest period of time we must be able to identify fresh cow problems and treat them as early as possible. Any health issue during the first days of the lactation will cause a slowdown in production and a potentially lower peak. Every pound lost from the optimal peak equals about 300 lbs for the full lactation. Persistence any health, nutrition or cow wellness issue will cause a drop in production during the latter lactation. Early detection of these problems allows us to treat the affected cow early before a drop in production actually takes place (or before it becomes severe). Early detection also will reduce the cost of treatment and will likely increase treatment effectiveness. The above graph is from an internal study on the additional use of activity and rumination information in the timely detection of mastitis in a commercial dairy farm that is already using milk yield and conductivity, to alert the farmer about a cow suspected of developing mastitis. (Lacker et al. Dairy Cattle Welfare Symposium, Canada,2012) In the figure lactation curves of cows with various health characteristic are present: healthy mature cows (blue line), cows with mastitis detected using alerts triggered by milk conductivity and yield (red line), and cows with mastitis detected using also rumination and activity data (green line). All cows with mastitis were modeled as having mastitis at the median time point found in this study. Overall, cows with mastitis detected by the system in the parlor lost about 600 kg of milk, whereas mastitis cows detected by using also activity and rumination data lost only 35o kg milk per mastitis case. Prediction & early detection of post-calving disorders 产后疾病的早期检测和预警 Daily rumination time of healthy and (later diagnosed) diseased cows in the first week after calving 产后一周患有疾病的奶牛其每日反刍时间 Daily rumination of fresh cows according to health condition: The figure shows that rumination monitoring is an effective tool in prediction of post calving diseases and disorders. A healthy cow will ideally return to her target rumination within 6-7 days after calving (upper line in the graph). We found that cows with lower levels of rumination in the first week associated with post calving disorders will become acute few days later. By monitoring the cow’s rumination in the immediate post-fresh period, it is possible to get an early indication of a possible health problem, and thus to treat it quickly and potentially lessen the amount of time until recovery. This has important ramifications for milk production over the entire lactation. Source: SCR research

Health application: 健康管理:
Fresh cow monitoring 新产牛管理 If you are able to “hand hold” your cow, identify problems quickly and them treat them soon, then the effect on the path to peak production is minimized and ongoing production is not too negatively influenced. The blue line shows changes in rumination, but they were taken care of quickly (cow drenched – orally given medicine) – but as it was done early enough, the milk production was not negatively influenced. If Milk production is a LAGGING INDICATOR. Rumination is an EARLY INDICATOR. Source: SCR research

Ineffective Initial Treatment
Health application: 健康管理: Finding cows that relapse 判断疾病是否复发 Effective Treatment Ineffective Initial Treatment Mastitis Rumination also provides insight into treatment effectiveness and cow recovery. Each of the red bars displays the number of rumination minutes displayed by the cow in a period of two hours. The graph on the left shows rumination of the cow treated effectively for mastitis. We can see that the cow recovered her normal rumination levels within hours. On the right- We see the rumination levels for a cow where initial treatment was ineffective. The cow did not recover to normal rumination levels. The diagnosis was reassessed and the cow was retreated – the second treatment was effective as shown by the rumination recovery rate. Rumination monitoring can provide insight in how a cow is recovering from vaccinations. Source: SCR research

Nutrition application: 营养管理: Ration change effect 日粮调整产生的影响
TMR Change Return to old Ration Herd Average Daily Rumination Daily rumination minutes Let’s look at a real case of an Israeli herd whose ration was changed. The graph shows average herd rumination levels. Figure 5 provides a view of actual average herd rumination levels. A sudden drop in average rumination levels alerted the farmer to a possible problem. Four days later, milk production also began to decrease. Different sources of the problem were explored – until a soy component of the herd’s daily rations was removed from the diet. Average rumination times immediately increased. After a few days the component was returned to the herd’s diet and an immediate drop in average rumination times was again evident. At that time, the farmer decided to gradually return the ration to the herd’s diet, mixing it with other components while gradually increasing its ratio in the ration. Rumination levels returned to normal. Other cases of rumination monitoring provide insight into nutrition management: Moldy hay was fed to a herd in New York. The effects were monitored at the group level: aside from the 2 year olds, all groups maintained their normal rumination levels. The Producer decided to discontinue feeding the moldy hay to the 2 year old group but continue to feed the other groups with it. An Indiana herd manager noticed a drop in herd wide rumination levels every Wednesday, which is the regular feeder’s day off. They retrained the replacement and continually monitor his performance. Tip to presenter: Ask the prospect what could be the cost of this mistake- you can do a quick calculation that if this drop in rumination resulted in a single day herd wide drop of 1 lb in DMI and that 1lb of DMI is equal to 2.5 lbs. of milk, on a herd of 700 milking cows this translates to approximately $300 per occurrence.
