Research 1 Mathematical Terminology Mock Action Research Proposal Presentation Brandy Williams EDU671: Fundamentals of Educational Research Instructor: Newton Miller February 5, 2015

Research 2 Area of Focus The area of focus is to find the best solution for teaching and identifying key words in mathematical problem solving to help students properly write an equation to go along with word problems.

Research 3 Problem Students struggle writing math equations Students couldn’t identify key words Lack of understanding of math terminology

Research 4 Variables Focus will be on identifying and applying terminology Demographics Two students both identified at risk in math Three different strategies for teaching Different styles of assessments

Research 5 Research Questions 1.Will the use of the interactive online math software be effective in teaching the students terminology identification as well as writing math equations? 2.Would incorporating terminology and definitions along with each word problem be beneficial in teaching the students to identify and apply mathematical terminology to word problems? 3.Would providing visuals including addition and subtraction signs be more beneficial to teaching students mathematical terminology than interactive software?

Research 6 Prior Interventions  Use of small groups  Use of Visuals  One on one instruction

Research 7 Data Collection  Use of qualitative data > use of student journals > Observations  Quantitative data > online assessments measuring comprehensions and application > post tests using set rubrics  Data will be collected over a period of 2 weeks > unbias data only based on facts > data recorded after each observation or assessment

Research 8 Ethics Signed informed consent forms (Mills, 2014). Explanation of process Coding and categorizing Proper storage to maintain confidentiality
