2. 1607 The date is important because it was the date of the first permanent English settlement founded in the Americas. Jamestown provided a starting point for the 13 original English Colonies. Named after King James I and the river that runs behind it.

3. 1620 The date is important because it was the date of the second permanent English settlement founded in the Americas. Plymouth Rock, is located in the current state of Massachusetts along the Massachusetts Bay. And Plymouth means Pilgrims. Site of Pilgrims landing and the First Thanksgiving.

4. 1776 The Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia by delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson is known as the author of the Declaration of Independence and was a Virginia Colonial leader. He was also responsible for the Louisiana Purchase and became the 3 rd President of the United States of America.

5. 1787 The U.S. Constitution written in 1787 by delegates to the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation and decided to draft a new plan of government for the United States. This new plan was called the United States Constitution.

6. 1803 This date signifies the event known as The Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States. Thomas Jefferson Purchased this large Territory from France This began America’s westward expansion beyond the Mississippi River.

7. 1861-1865 American Civil War was fought over the issues of Slavery, states’ rights, and economic and sectional differences between the North and the South.
