THE FUTURE OF ROAD SAFETY: THE IMPACT OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES ROBERTO ARDITI – AISCAT/SINA (ASTM-SIAS GROUP)

FREEWAY PLATOONING (MODERATELY AUTOMATED FREEWAY OPERATION) Stockholm Cooperative Driving SARTRE

Volkswagen University of Leeds ERTICO SINA - SIAS Texas Transp. Institute Continental Automotive ITS Consulting University of Michigan DG RTD DG MOVE DG CONNECT

Objective A focus on the implementation of the International Cooperation Strategy for Transport Research and Innovation, developing cooperation activities particularly between the EU and the US.

2 EU+2 US experts Produced “white papers” Road Transport Automation as a Public-Private Enterprise Road Transport Automation as a Societal Change Agent

Overview Automated Driving Use Cases USE CASELevel of Automati on (SAE) SpeedDedicated space needed Private or public Examples Available now (projects) Interaction with infrastructure (1 low to 5 high) 1 Freeway platooning 2-3High (> 115 km/h) Possibly both BOTHSartre, Peloton 3 2 Automated city centre 3-4Low (10-40 mph) NoBOTHAdaptIVe4 3 Urban Chauffeur4Low (< 30 mph) BothPUBLICGoogle, Citymobil2 5

Description Summary Use Case 1: Freeway Platooning ”Moderately Automated", SAE level 2-3 Commercial vehicles and privately-owned vehicles Motor vehicle standards, road operator approval Limited access interurban highways/motorways only May have dedicated lanes and temporal restrictions System Concept: Lead commercial vehicle, trailing commercial and passenger cars V2V communications essential, standards in place Improved infrastructure of lane markings, barriers Automated entry/exit from platoon Parameters and operation can be weather-sensitive

Description Scenario Operation and User Experience Initial emergence of scenario by 2018 Motorway operators benefit from reduced congestion but need to invest in infrastructure Lead commercial vehicle has certified, trained driver In trailing vehicles driver can multi-task Up to 130 km/h, 6m gaps Highway capacity increased 15 percent Energy savings of 8% - 16%

Sectorial Perspectives User Experience Potential Benefits: Relaxation of hours of service limits for trailing commercial vehicles Commercial driving more attractive to new drivers Trailing drivers may engage in other tasks Increased highway/motorway capacity and reduced congestion More efficient commercial shipping Consumers utilize lost time, productive commutes Potential limitations (may need attention): Lead commercial drivers require additional training Mixed traffic issues must be identified and solved Weather limitations Standards between independent jurisdictions

Sectorial Perspectives City / Authority /Operators Potential Benefits: Reduction in energy consumption and lower emissions Improved traffic flow management, reduced congestion Improved safety New jobs “Found minutes” for consumers, stay connected Change of land use where people live Potential limitations (may need attention): Infrastructure upgrades Public concern about mixed traffic Inter-jurisdictional standards Security threads

Sectorial Perspectives Open Questions Is the timeframe properly assessed in the next few years? Are there legal issues that prevent this kind of operation? Are there technical issues that prevent this operation? Are there economical issues that prevent this operation? What is the role of research to facilitate the overall process? Are we able to find room an efficient EU-US cooperation in the field?

THANKS FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION
