2 Physical Features Most of Iran is a plateau bordered by mountains with some desert It has fertile lands and many resources The Elburz Mountains are located in the north along the Caspian sea coast. The Zagros Mtns. in the southwest are also a major range.

3 Iran’s History Iran is the home of the ancient Persian Empire It has been ruled by many different group throughout history 1921 the first Iranian Shah took power. 1941 his pro-western son took over. Passed many reforms to modernize county 1979 religious revolution installed the Ayatollah and President.

4 Government Theocracy – Govt. led by a religious leader or leaders (Ayatollah) Has elected President and Legislature with limited power. Has supported terrorist groups Called for the destruction of Israel

7 People and Economy Iran’s population = 68 million Most people in Iran are Persian 90% of population are Shiite Muslims They speak Farsi (Persian) Iran has many natural resources including Oil Iran is famous for its elaborately designed Persian Rugs Iran’s fertile lands allows for large numbers of farms
