Joseph Ferrara Team Lead (ME) Joseph ChurchDesign Engineer (ME) Joshua Van Hook LabView Engineer (EE) Jamie Jackson Electronics (EE) Joelle Kirsch Project Manager (ME) Sponsor: Dr. Elizabeth DeBartolo 9/30/20161MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand

Project Description Create a test machine that can accurately measure load and strain on a material sample Key Level Customer NeedsEngineering Specs Collect Load data from two load cellsUp to 10 Newtons resolution of +/- 0.001 Collect strain data with use of high speed camera and imaging analysis software Up to 100% elongation Resolution of +/- 0.1% Allow for 1000 pictures/test Eliminate Edge Effects with use of centralized area Cross shape sample, concentrate on central area of 10 mm x 10 mm 9/30/20162MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand

Design Concept Lead Screws – Oppositely Threaded Moveable Block – Pulls sample 2# Load Cell Thompson Stainless Steel Shaft Precision Linear Ball Bearings Needle Roller Bearing/Nylon Washers Adjustable Clamp Motion Arm Pivoting Control Arm Support Rod 9/30/20163MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand

Design Concept 9/30/20164MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand

System Architecture 9/30/20165MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand MotorSample Load Cell Motor Controller CameraDAQ LabVIEW GUI Motor Controller Power Data from DAQ colleted DAQ sends signal to take pictures Moves motor GUI controls motor through controller Load call measures stress on sample Camera takes pictures of sample Lead Screws Provides the Vertical motion to stretch sample

High Level Risk Assessment Load Cell Damage Overload or side load could potentially damage the integrity of the sensor Mitigation plan Redesign clamping system or add a support system to ensure no side loading that could significantly cause a problem Clamping redesign would include a lighter material like UHMWPE Top Plate Wiggle Movement of the top plate could result in inaccurate load and strain data Mitigation plan Add in support posts at all four corners of the plate for stability 9/30/20166MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand

Current State of Design Design meets all customer needs Design meets engineering specifications for full system and subsystems On target to meet project budget of $1500 except for potential overrun on cost NI DAQ PCI Board - $379 Extra Linear Bearings ~$20/bearing Schedule: On or Around on schedule. Wanted to Prototype before end of quarter Mitigations: Side Load on load cell impact on integrity of device: Speak with Manufacturer or Build a support system DAQ/Bearing cost approval: Need approval or reduction in features Finalize design over Fall/Winter break to prepare for prototype 9/30/20167MSD I 09045: Membrane Characterization Stand
