1 Project need Objective Measurement of oxygen concentration in cells and solutions is vital to the observation of gas composition in living tissue. A cost-effective solution for oxygen measurement is ideal. To construct a cost- effective solution to measure oxygen concentrations, in ambient, using the quenching effect of fluorescent polymers. P09051 MSD I - Oxygen Gas Sensor Jeremy Goodman, Charles Schillberg, Samuel Shin

2 Operational Approach Sensor Operation  Quantification of oxygen concentration through measurement of the lifetime and intensity of emitted radiation generated by tris-ruthenium (II) dichloride complex [Ru(dpp)] via the fluorescent-quenching effect Device Operation  Ru(dpp) polymer will be excited by an external pulsing-LED circuit, emitted light will be detected by a photodiode  Oxygen introduced in a testing ambient will initiate quenching effect in Ru(dpp) polymer

3 Design & Fabrication Plan Fabrication of P-I-N photodiode Synthesis of Ru(dpp) Fluorescent polymer Design of LED pulse and detection system Construction of N2/O2 Testing Chamber

4 Project Plan Schedule:  First Quarter  Ru(dpp) polymer synthesis (ALL)  Design and building of LED pulsing and detection circuit (Sam Shin)  Preliminary testing of LED Pulsing/Detection circuit via commercially available photodiode (Sam Shin)  Design of testing chamber (Charles Schillberg)  Design and simulation of PIN photodiode (Jeremy Goodman)  Second Quarter  Fabrication of PIN photodiode in RIT SMFL (Jeremy Goodman)  Construction of testing chamber (Charles Schillberg)  Testing of completed design (ALL)
