Atomic Properties By: Mr. Castillo & Mr. Buenrostro

Atomic Properties Every atom has three main properties: - Atomic ID number (#) -Atomic Mass -Atomic Charge

#1 Atomic Number Every atom has a unique ID number This ID number is determined by the number of protons in the nucleus. It is called the “Atomic Number.”

Atomic Number What is the atomic number of the atom? Counting the protons = 6; The Atomic number is 6.

#2 Atomic Mass Atomic mass: The total mass of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. Atomic Mass Units (A.M.U.)= measuring unit This can be calculated by adding up all the protons and neutrons in the atoms nucleus. 0

Atomic Mass What is the atomic mass of the atom? Adding the protons and Neutrons = 12; The Atomic mass is 12

#3 Atomic Charge Atomic charge: The total electrical charge of protons and electrons in an atom. It can be positive, negative, or neutral (+/-/0). This can be calculated by subtracting protons from electrons in the atom.

Atomic Charge What is the atomic charge of the atom? Subtracting the protons from Electrons= 0; Electrically neutral atom.

Atomic Charge In electrically neutral atoms protons always equal the electrons (+ = -); same quantity. There is one Patty proton for every Eddie Electron; the total charge is ZERO (0).

A.P.E. A=Atomic number P= Proton number E= Electron number In an electrically neutral atom, an uncharged atom, all three numbers are the same; equal. Atomic Number 4 = 4 Protons = 4 electrons

Label the locations of the ATOM? Nucleus Orbit, cloud, or shell

Which subatomic particles make up the Atomic Mass? Where is the atomic mass found?? Protons Neutrons Nucleus

Which subatomic particles determine the Atomic charge? Where is the atomic charge found?? Protons (+) Electrons (-) Nucleus and OCS

Which particles are found in the same amount in an electrically neutral atom? HINT: A.P.E.!! Protons(+) Electrons(-)

Any Questions?
