Tuesday 16 th August JUNIOR GET2GO CHALLENGE YEARS NINE AND TEN

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE GET2GO TEAMS ARE MADE UP OF 8 STUDENTS As a team of 8 you are to complete 4 challenges Each challenge is around 45mins to and hour. These include:Orienteering Mountain Biking Rafting/paddling Problem Solving You are given a 30 minute break between each of these challenges to give you time to get to the next event as you are shuttled by a parent or teacher to them.

ORIENTEERING You will be given a map like so. Each member of the team will go out And get a marker, then tag the next person until 8 have been collected then As a team of 8 you go and get the Remainder markers (check points). You try and get as many as you can in a given time this is known as a rogaine. Lots of checkpoints get as many as you can in a specified (given) time. All adventure races use this system. There are normally way too many check Points to get so you plan a route to get As many as you can.

Orienteering Each member out to get a marker Then as a team out to get the remainder points

MOUNTAIN BIKING 2 Bikes relay style 2 people start the race, complete a lap and then pass onto the next 2 people and so on. You might decide a person does 2 laps then take a break as long as everyone has had a turn before the time is up.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

PROBLEM SOLVING Here you are given something and anything. But you will be given a challenge and together you have to come up with a plan of attack to master and achieve the challenge. Never do know what the challenge is But you have to think outside the box. I will coach you in this and give you many scenarios. Eg. Get your 8 team members through a car tyre tube as fast as you can. You can do it as many times you like in the 10 minutes given. OR Build a tower out of blocks without it falling over in 10 minutes OR walk on sleds as a team of 8 across a river as many time you can in 10 minutes.

Problem Solving

RAFTING KAYAKING Here you have to create a raft or floatation device that will transport 4 to 8 people on. Working together to accomplish/achieve the task as many times as possible. For example last year they made a raft with a person having to sit on the drum, they kayaked as far as they could until the rope that was connected to the kayak for tight and then they pulled them back in They needed to know how to tie knots, build a raft and work together in the raft and at the end of the rope.

KAYAKING/RAFTING

WIN THE WAIKATO COMPETITION AND HEAD TO GREAT BARRIER ISLAND IN DECEMBER FOR A WEEK

ADVENTURE RACING WHAT IS IT? is a combination of two or more endurance disciplines for example running and mountain biking. Events are structured around orienteering or navigating using a map. cross-country running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope skills are often involved in one event.

For example You get given a map with Lots of circles on it. You plan a way you want to get these Markers (checkpoints). On your way to them you may have to run, bike or paddle to get to them. Also on your way to might come across mystery activities, eg. Weetbix eating, shooting a gun, to Brain teasers, to balancing on a log Climbing a wall, abseiling down a dam. Problem Solving. You don’t know until you get there or at the start of the event. Which makes it all exciting.
