A Catechetical Framework Catechetical Modules (July 2015) Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
2
Opening Prayer The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35)
3
Reflecting on Scripture Facilitator: Jesus himself approached them and walked with them. All: As a child of God I, too, am on a journey…my own faith journey. Although at times I may not recognize Christ’s presence, I pray that I may be open to Christ’s eternal presence and walk in His light.
4
Opening Prayer (Continued) Facilitator: Jesus went and stayed with them. All: In Baptism and Confirmation, I was sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May God continue to find a dwelling place in my heart.
5
Opening Prayer (Continued) Facilitator: While Jesus was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. All: Strengthened by the precious Body and Blood of Christ, May I be a source of nourishment to those I serve and love.
6
Opening Prayer (Continued) Facilitator: They recounted what happened and how they recognized him in the breaking of the bread. All: As the heart of the Emmaus-walkers burned within them so long ago, I, too, experience the source of warmth and the light when I recognize Christ presence among us. May my words and actions reflect my fidelity to the Gospel, And may I lead others to witness to Jesus. AMEN.

“…Christ’s presence among us…” Turn & Talk
8
Essential Question for this Module… How will the Catechetical Framework for Lifelong Faith Formation (CFLFF) support me as a catechist in providing lifelong faith formation?
9
Quick-check… Why was the CFLFF developed? What is its purpose?
10
Let’s View the Cardinal’s Video! His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo www.archgh.org/OEC/Catechetical-Framework

National Directory for Catechesis (NDC) (2005) “The object of catechesis is communion with Jesus Christ. Catechesis leads people to enter the mystery of Christ, to encounter him, and to discover themselves and the meaning of their lives in him.” (p. 55)
13
Cardinal DiNardo’s Promulgation Letter (dated August 6, 2013) “The CFLFF is now the definitive framework by which catechesis is to be carried out in this Archdiocese. Beginning no later than January 6, 2014, all catechetical efforts and programming is to be done with reference to and in support of the goals outlined in this document. This is true in all catechetical contexts, be they archdiocesan programs, Catholic schools, parish formation programs, early childhood centers, university campus ministries, catechetical efforts in detention facilities, or home-based catechetical efforts.”

30
Learning Targets (developmentally-appropriate concepts to be addressed in lesson plans) Clustered by TASK & by AGE of learners Birth to Age 5 (Early Childhood) Grades 1-5 (Childhood) Grades 6-8 (Early Adolescence) Grades 9-12 (Adolescence) Adults (Adulthood)

37
Checking for Understanding (Formative Assessment: Framework Vocabulary) Turn & Talk: Explain this statement from the CFLFF and use the appropriate vocabulary. 4.1.1.3 Jesus revealed to people God’s plan for true happiness.

Group Activity: Spiraling of Faith Concepts (Checking Your Understanding) Read through all slips of paper. What are these statements called? Which “task” and “strand” do these statements represent? Place them in a developmentally appropriate order Explain why these “learning targets” are Christocentric.
41
Correct Sequence of LTs 1.2.2.2 – A sacrament is a sign of God’s life and love that gives grace. 2.2.2.1 – A sacrament is a visible sign of God’s life and love given to the Church by Jesus Christ. 3.2.2.1 – The Seven Sacraments are sacred signs through which Jesus Christ shares God's life with Christians. 5.2.2.1 - Sacraments are liturgical celebrations that use signs and symbols revealed by Jesus Christ to celebrate and bring about God’s grace.

MA 2.2.2 – Sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit; Catholics are sanctified and the Body of Christ gives greater honor and glory to God.
43
Checking for Understanding (Formative Assessment) For students in grades 1-5, what is the “deep understanding” about sacraments that the Archdiocese wants catechists to emphasize in faith formation? How does that understanding extend for older students and adults?
44
3-Minute Pause (Stand & Share, if you prefer) While the Framework document clusters learning targets by grade level, should you merely turn to your grade level pages and teach down the list of learning targets? Why or why not?
45
In Conclusion…our catechetical framework… Lifelong from “womb to tomb,” resulting in a mature, faith-filled, adult Catholic Organized by 6 “tasks”/dimensions of catechesis (GDC, NDC, & OHWB) Sub-tasks or “strands” Definitive statements (“learning targets”) of faith Correlated to the Catholic documents Goal: to form Christian communities of disciples
46
Sacred Scripture… … the heart of catechesis – A list of 125 passages, coming from all parts of the Bible, which are absolutely essential to a mature appreciation of the Scripture – Cross referenced that list with the Lectionary for Mass
47
Common Prayers & Formulas (by age level) Learning by Heart, our common language to grow in faith, should …begin early …be continual …be gradual
49
Time to process what you’ve learned!! Popcorn Responses – Think and call out one to three words that describe what you now know about the CFLFF.
50
Exit Slip On an index card, answer this module’s Essential Question: How will the Catechetical Framework for Lifelong Faith Formation (CFLFF) support me as a catechist in providing lifelong faith formation? Then, please answer this question: What was the most helpful part of this 2- hour module that helped you answer the Essential Question?
