1 Irony Irony is disagreement between what is said and what occurs. (A discrepancy between what is anticipated to be true and what is actually true.) Three kinds of irony: 1. verbal irony 2. dramatic irony 3. situational irony

2 Verbal Irony verbal irony: the use of words to mean something different from what a person actually says. -Used by a speaker intentionally Examples: 1.Thanks for the ticket, officer. You just made my day! 2.I can’t wait to read that 700 page report on slugs.

3 Dramatic Irony dramatic irony: when the audience is aware of something of which the characters in the story are not aware Examples: 1.In a movie when a detective does not know that the criminal responsible for the crimes in the city is his partner. The audience however is already aware of this fact and waits anxiously to know what will happen once the character finds out what they already know. 2.Romeo and Juliet

4 Situational Irony situational irony: the discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what actually happens Examples: 1.A man buys a gun to protect himself and then that weapon is used to injure him 2.A weathercaster finds herself caught in a huge storm
