1 FOM 4.2 Remediating Arc Flash Hazards in New and Existing Data Centers Joseph Furmanski Director, Data Center Facilities and Technologies

2 Data Center World – Certified Vendor Neutral Each presenter is required to certify that their presentation will be vendor-neutral. As an attendee you have a right to enforce this policy of having no sales pitch within a session by alerting the speaker if you feel the session is not being presented in a vendor neutral fashion. If the issue continues to be a problem, please alert Data Center World staff after the session is complete.

3 My Disclaimer I am not an Electrical Engineer. I am not giving Advice or Recommendations Any OSHA or NFPA Representatives: Please Identify yourselves now! I do not want to have my company fined and I want to keep my job! I don’t want anyone to get hurt!

4 Remediating Arc Flash Hazards in New and Existing Data Centers NFPA 70E and OSHA continue to increase the pressure on data centers to address power safety regulations, which cannot be ignored. This session will discuss how these regulations can be met while maintaining the high availability needs of a large Integrated Healthcare Delivery Organization that depends on the 24/7 availability of its electronic health record systems. Process, mitigation options and costs for new data centers will also be addressed. Translation : How we Handled Arc Flash Electrical Safety in Non-Engineering Terms.

5 What are we going to cover? What is an Arc Flash? Why Do we Care? Our Situation Evaluate and Analyze Current Data Center Solution Implementation What about New Data Centers? Summary and Questions

6 What is an Arc Flash ? An arc flash is the light and heat produced from an electric arc supplied with sufficient electrical energy to cause substantial damage, harm, fire, or injury.

7 Why do we Care about Arc Flashes? Regulations NFPA OSHA Availability Data Center IT Equipment SAFETY

8 Why do we Care about Arc Flashes? When an electrical arc occurs, employees working on electrical equipment without adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) risk serious injury or death. Even someone standing more than 10 feet from the fault source can be fatally burned. According to the American Society of Safety Engineers, more than 3,600 workers suffer disabling electrical contact injuries annually.

9 Our Situation Primary Data Center 21+ Years Old Near Tier 3 – Dual Power Feeds 10,000+ Sq Ft 1 MW Secondary Data Center 27+ Years Old Tier 2 (on a good day) 6,400+ Sq Ft 600 kW We experienced 3 Arc Flash Events !

10 How did we address this? Evaluate and Analyze Replace Secondary Data Center Remediate Primary Data Center

31 What about New Facilities? New Facilities should be designed with Power Safety Compliance in mind! Low Voltage Power Power Bus Etc… The Incremental Cost at Design Time should be negligible.

32 What about New Facilities? Power Bus can possibly minimize exposure. You still need Studies done to build ! Short Circuit Study Breaker Coordination Study Arc Flash Hazard Risk Assessment

33 3 Key Things You Have Learned During this Session 1.Don’t Ignore Regulations meant for your SAFETY ! 2.Evaluate and Analyze 3.Protect, Remediate and/or Prevent
