Definition A proposal is “a persuasive offer intended to secure authorization to perform a task or provide products or services that will benefit the reader.”

Types of Proposals Solicited, in response to an RFP (request for proposal) from the reader Unsolicited, originating with the author Internal—may be solicited or unsolicited External—may be solicited or unsolicited

Format of Proposals Varies, depending on writing situation Internal—memo, e-mail, or memo report External—letter or letter report Also may be in long report format

Objectives Clearly summarize situation or problem Explain how proposed ideas will correct it Confirm feasibility/benefits and refute objections Establish credentials/qualifications Identify resources, equipment, support Provide timeline and budget Motivate the reader to accept the proposal
