SL.5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Jessica-Giuliani Copy these into your lesson plans

What is opinion writing? Basically, it means to state an opinion with evidence. In this lesson, we will learn how to write a solid opinion and how to back it up with evidence.

O = Opinion R = Reasons E = Examples (Evidence) O = Opinion (again) What does OREO stand for?

There are different types of OREO writing that we will be studying: 1 paragraph Multiple paragraphs (essay) Different Types Why do both? In order to get where we want/should be, we will need to scaffold our way there. We will start with OREO paragraph writing to learn the structure. Then, we will move on to OREO essay writing to show off our skills.

Introduction that clearly states your opinion Specific reasons to support your opinion that explains your thinking Has a conclusion that restates opinion Ideas are grouped into paragraphs Whole essay has correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation Parts of an OREO Essay

The way I see it... I would say... As far as I can tell... I find it... I feel that... I strongly believe that... I prefer… I think… I feel… I believe… In my opinion, The best thing about… Everyone should… Types of Opinion Sentence Starters What is the most interesting sport to watch on tv? What is the best flavor of ice cream? Who is the funniest character on SpongeBob? What is the best thing about school? Write these in your notebook

Example OREO paragraph: I believe that smoking should not be allowed in public places like restaurants. Second-hand smoke is really dangerous leading to all types of health concerns. Imagine being a non-smoking waiter or a waitress at a restaurant and having to inhale other people's toxic fumes. Picture how they would feel, after living a healthy life, coming down with lung cancer! It just doesn't seem right to me. It is for this reason that smoking should not be allowed in public places like restaurants. O pinion R eason E xplanation O pinion What is the opinion? examples

Imagine being a non-smoking waiter or a waitress at a restaurant and having to inhale other people's toxic fumes. 13 Example: Should the teacher get a new car? O: Tell how you feel about the topic R: Tell a reason why you feel that way or why someone should agree with you. E: give examples that support your reason O: restate the opinion (with feeling) I think that I deserve to get a new car. I have been driving my car for many years now and it is getting older. Old cars can start to have expensive problems. Also, when cars get too old, people won’t want to buy them so it’s best to trade them in while they are still young. A new car will be safer than an older one because it will have updated safety features! For these reasons, getting a new car is clearly the right decision to make. Another Model of an OREO paragraph:

BONUS Mini Lesson on Analyzing paragraphs One day review extension lesson…

An opinion cannot be supported by another opinion. Example: “I like cats because they are cute.” An opinion needs to be supported by facts and specific reasons. Example: “I like cats because my extremely friendly cat nudges against my leg when I get home from work.” OREO Tip

OREO Analyzing paragraphs

Review What does O stand for? What does R stand for? What does E stand for? What does O stand for? Be ready to tell me ( no hands up)

Review We have been learning what opinions, facts, reasons, examples, evidence, are and what restating is. We have also practice writing 2 OREO paragraphs together while following a guided model. Today, we have a different job: analyzing paragraphs that are already written for effectiveness.

Watch my “I do” model on the next slide. Your purpose for watching: Be ready to explain what makes up the parts of an OREO paragraph. Directions:

Decide which fits OREO… What is the best pet to have? Paragraph 1 I strongly believe that dogs are the best pets a person can have. They are just so cute! You can buy a small dog, a big dog, a fat dog, or a skinny dog depending on which type of dog you like best. However, the best type of dog is a super fluffy one. That way, when you go to bed at night, you can use it as a pillow! I have a fluffy dog, and he is a great cuddle buddy. Dogs are clearly better than any other animal. Paragraph 2 The way I see it, a dog is the best pet a person can have. Dogs have many great qualities. First of all, they are very playful and are fun to have around. Also, dogs are known to be very loyal and protective, so they will always make you feel safe. Most importantly, dogs are great companions and will never leave your side. These are the all the reasons why a dog is the best pet a person can have.

Check for Understanding: Your purpose was: Be ready to explain what makes up the parts of an OREO paragraph. Did you do it?

“We do” Directions: The teacher will group you into sections. You will read and analyze the OREO paragraphs on the next slide. Which one is better?????? You will justify which is correct by underlining and labeling the parts of OREO. NORMS : active listening, small group voices, transitions are smooth and orderly, on task

Print this slide for group work Paragraph # 1 In my opinion, every school should require its students to participate in Physical Education classes. Physical Education is beneficial to every student’s well being. For example, it allows students to get their necessary exercise that they may not be getting at home. Also, participating in P.E. is a great way to reduce stress that comes from doing schoolwork all day long. Finally, Physical education encourages students to engage in healthy activities for the rest of their lives! All of these examples are great reasons why every school should require its students to participate in Physical Education classes. Paragraph # 2 I strongly believe that every school should require its students to participate in physical Education classes. In P.E., you can play football! Let’s face it; everyone loves football. You can run around and throw the ball to your friends or pick two teams and play a competitive game. However, the best part about P.E. is that if you don’t like football, you can play something else like Frisbee or soccer. Basically, Physical Education is the best

Additional Practice: Print this slide for group work Paragraph # 1 I believe that fifth graders should be allowed to have a cell phone. Cell phones are just so much fun to use! I love my cell phone, and I think every fifth grader should have one that they can love too. There are many types of cell phones that people can buy, but in reality, an iPhone is the best cell phone in the whole wide world. They can do just about anything you could possibly imagine. Everyone should have an iPhone because iPhones are clearly the most awesome cell phones on the entire planet! With an iPhone, you can even play cool games. Paragraph # 2 In my opinion, all fifth graders should be allowed to have a cell phone. Cell phones are an important item to have, even for young children. For example, cell phones can be used if you need to call someone for help in case of an emergency. Also, many cell phones have GPS on them and can help you find your way if you are lost. They even can be useful if you need to know information about something because, with some cell- phones, you can simply access the Internet in the palm of your hand! These reasons clearly explain why fifth graders should be allowed to have a cell phone.
