3 Problem You work for the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and you have been presented with the following problem. There has been an increase in the number of illnesses related to rotten food found in grocery stores. Your job is to educate the public about the fact that food rotting is the result of a chemical change and the evidence that indicates that a chemical change (rotting) is occurring in the food.

4 Process In order to properly educate the public, you will do a study on the rotting of a banana. You will use the data from this study to help you make a convincing, educational poster.

5 Solution Your are required to create an FDA educational poster to be posted in all grocery stores in the United States. This poster should include an explanation of how rotting is a chemical change and not a physical change. It also should include the evidence that shoppers should look for that indicates a chemical change (rotting) has occurred, and evidence of a chemical change that may not be readily apparent to the shopper.

7  What is a physical change?  What is a chemical change?  What is the evidence that shows a chemical change is or has happened?

8 Physical Change  Only changes one or more of the physical properties  Does NOT change identity of the substance  Is mechanically reversible

9 Chemical Change  Substances change their identities (new substance different from the reactants)  Evidence includes: gas production (bubbles or odor change), temp. change, light production, precipitate, color change (different color from all the reactants),

10 Work Session  Read and take notes using pages 44-49 (complete section review questions on page 49); Pages 50- 55 (section review on page 55); 388- top section of page 390

11 Closing- What we learned today  Discuss with someone at your table about what you learned today.  Your partner will share what you discussed with them.
