2005 Spring SIW April 200505S-SIW-20056 MSDL Study Group Coordination MSDL Study Group has just been stood up: Chair: LTC John Surdu Vice-Chair: Major Kevin Galvin Secretary: Wendy Lam Encourage all Coalition BML Members to be members of MSDL Study Group –Coalition BML has a close relationship with MSDL –This relationship needs to be spelled out in our final report

2005 Spring SIW April 200505S-SIW-20058 Task 1 – Assess Ongoing Efforts This would seem to be the easiest of the three tasks and as a result of the creation of the Study Group it has provided a focus for others to inform us of their efforts in developing a BML. What seems to be common is the use of XML and C2IEDM (other Data Models) and there are other efforts that have the same aims such as the Military Scenario Definition Language (MSDL) but with a different focus. There is also a growing recognition as various Nations embark on the Digitization trail that we have to add structure to the BML that we use to day if we want to use simulation to stimulate operational C4I systems or in the Military Decision Making Process for Course of Action Analysis and Mission Rehearsal Recognising the need is one thing but providing adequate funding at a time when many of our countries are engaged in military operations throughout the world is a challenge.

2005 Spring SIW April 200505S-SIW-20059 Task 2 – Standard Framework Developing a standard framework is perhaps the more challenging aspect of the study. What is a “Standard Framework” or do we mean a “Framework of Standards”. A BML is only part of the framework of C4I to M&S interoperability. Others include Terrain and other Geospatial data and Scenario Generation both of them need BML and vice- versa. What is a BML specification? When we define a language do we define grammar and a dictionary or a novel. The 5W format is the first step in developing a specification

2005 Spring SIW April 200505S-SIW-200510 C2IEDM 5 W format of BML US Army BML Prototype WSDL Sim OpCIS BML Ontology – Level 3 BML Services – Level 2 C2IEDM Specification Level 1 – No extensions/Not specific enough Mapping BML Long term BML Specification Need 5Ws Need Msg Format XML C2IEDM XML tags need to be identified US Navy BML US Air BML ?

2005 Spring SIW April 200505S-SIW-200511 Task 3 – Recommend Steps to form a Coalition BML Product Development Group (PDG) Should be able to identify a set of applicable standards such as XML, Web Services (SOAP, XML Schemas, etc), Data Model (C2IEDM?). Identify in addition R&D areas such as Ontologies, Task Language Grammars, etc. Need to recommend PDG activities.
