2 Background The Nuclear bomb is also named the Atomic bomb, the atomic bombs energy is released by the reactions of uranium, plutonium, or even fusion. The chemicals are used to make the bomb so it can explode when it is dropped.

3 Background “ At the conference on Theoretical Physics held in Washington, D.C. 26, January 1939, which was attended by most of the principal workers in this field, reports were made on the word done on the fission of uranium by Otto Hahn, Fritz Srassman, Otto R. Frisch, and Lise Meitner.” (Children of the Atomic Bomb,1)

4 History T he first bomb that was ever detonated was at Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1946. The military dropped the Nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 it killed and wounded about 130,000 people. But 3 days later a bomb was dropped by the Americans on Nagasaki which it killed 74,000 people and 75,000 people who were injured but at the time there was about 286,000 people living in the city.

5 History In 1940 about 18 months later about the facts of the fission of the atom was discovered and the military had developed which brought attention to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and also to Albert Einstein. “By June 1940, it was known that fission was produced by thermal neutrons in U-235, the rare isotope of uranium. It was not yet known that it was also produced in U-238, the more common isotope. Six months later, active work in the field of fission was underway in 10 or more universities, as well as at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, the Standard Oil Development Co., and the National Bureau of Standards.”(Children of the Atomic Bomb,1)

6 Background A nuclear bomb can cover about 200 miles of radiation also if you get the radiation of the bomb you can die in two days. The internal radiation makes about five percent of total energy that is released in the explosion and the radiation is about 1.50 miles long. The fallout radiation is about ten percent of energy that is set free by the nuclear explosion.
