19 Former Secretary of State Hazel Blears (2008) “This is an excellent example of the Fire and Rescue Service spotting an issue and doing something about it. You are thoroughly respected and trusted in the communities that you serve and as a result of your drive and determination and the commitment of key partners, vulnerable elderly people in Cheshire can now benefit from many more services”

20 Supporting You – case study (May 2009) Mrs J was referred to Supporting You following a Home Safety Assessment from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. They were concerned about her lack of heating. The Home Assessor visited Mrs J, who has arthritis and a heart condition, and was living alone in a property which was very isolated and always cold. The Home Assessor completed a claim form for Attendance Allowance which was awarded at the higher rate. This meant that Mrs J was now entitled to a government Warm Front Grant of £2700 which paid for the installation of central heating.

21 Supporting You – case study (May 2009) She was also referred to Age Concern Cheshire’s Falls Prevention project who fitted grab rails in her bathroom so she feels safer accessing her bath and because of the Attendance Allowance she is able to get out and about more in taxis. Mrs J is very grateful for the help she received from the Fire Service and Age Concern Cheshire and feels both her physical and mental health have improved following intervention.
