8  Instructions are a list of directions that tell us how to complete an activity or task; how to do something.  What are the instructions on pg 2 for? Discuss  What instructions have you heard today?  What is the difference between instructions and rules?  Can you think of some situations where it is very important to give clear instructions? What can happen if clear instructions are not given?

9  Complete the activities on your worksheet.  Make sure you read the instructions carefully and do everything it tells you to do.  This is a timed activity. You have five minutes to complete.

10  In partners, complete the ‘giving directions’ activity.  Student A: Read the following instructions to your partner. Speak as clearly as you can, but not slowly. Repeat only if your partner asks you to.  Student B: Do what your partner tells you. Write or draw according to his/her instructions. If you didn’t hear or understand, ask to repeat or explain (e.g. Could you repeat that, please?/I’m sorry, I don’t understand. What’s a …?).

12  Look carefully at the two examples of instructions you have been given.  How are they different?  How are they similar?  Text pg 3: With a partner, discuss and identify the features of instructions using the 2 examples you have been given.

16 Look at the sentences below. What is the difference? Open your books. The students have opened their books. The imperative is the verb form used to tell us to do things.

17 1. Put oil in a saucepan and heat. 2. Add the tomatoes, water and stock to the saucepan. 3. Mash the tomatoes lightly with a fork and boil.

18  A recipe is a set of instructions (using the imperative) that tells us how to cook something.  What do we need to include in a recipe? You are now going to watch a YouTube clip of a particular recipe.

19  What is the recipe for? Can you think of a good title for the clip?

20 Now you are going to put together a complete set of instructions (recipe).  What is the title of your recipe?  What ingredients do you need?  How many steps are there?  Don’t forget headings and clear steps using the imperative.
