12. BIRD CONSERVATION IN STATE PARKS The bird Consevervation Area Program, BCA for short, is modelled after the National Audubon Society ‘s Important bird Area Program. It was signed into law in 1997, and is designed to provide an understanding of conserving birds and their habitats. Parks have importance to large numbers of pelagic seabirds, wading birds, waterfowl, shoe birds, migratory birds and is significant as a bird research site. At the present, 59 BCAs have been designated, 25 of them are associated with State Parks. State parks offer rich natural habitats for interesting and unique birds. Over 300 species of birds live there. Rockefeller State Park Preserve, is home to 180 recorded species of birds.

13. BIODIVERSITY The findings from a six- years project to gather info on the parks biodiversity were important. The historic sites and parks have over 900 occurrences of 358 rare species and natural community types. Seven of these have only one known occurrence in the entire state. Endangered Chittenango ovate amber snail is found only in one state park in New York ! Examples of New York's biodiversity include the old growth hemlock Northern hardwood forests in Allegany State Park in the West of New York. The short eared owls at Gilgo Beach State Park on Long Island and the carnivorous Butterwort plant at Taughannock Falls State Park in the Tinger Lakes. Historic sites and parks provide a habitat for many plants and animals across the Empire State. Wetland are often home to a plant and animal biodiversity. They clean water of pollutants and mitigate flooding.
