Some things to consider..

Considerations for the Eden… People want rapid, tangible action. Many want extensive dredging. “Us vs crayfish” NFM evidence. Access to FD grant in aid? Farmers supportive of NFM but concerned about : any loss of productivity and capital value of the land. long term maintenance and liabilities.

NFM considerations: development where there are multiple land managers

Practitioners aspirations..

A future model can… Identify the range of options that can be applied on a catchment. By changing / modifying the combination of options on a catchment look at the effect on flows, flood duration etc. Provide flexibility for different combinations of intervention. Eg, optimal, 2 nd best, 3 rd best etc. Help us understand how flood risk measures interact with other eco- systems services (natural capital).

A future model can… Work with existing EA modelling for traditional flood defences. Adapt to future technology as best as possible. Understand the effect of different channel maintenance regimes. Do we speed up or slow down? Outputs that allow members of the public to understand what the effects of different actions are. Outputs should have a direct line of sight to implementation and delivery.

The holy grail? Scaling up NFM for Appleby? Carlisle?
